This seems the most likely place to get some thoughts on The Bloody Handed Name of Bronze.

So, has anyone played and did it run smoothly? I’ve been unable to sell my bi-weekly group on it but am really eager to bring this to the table. My best opportunity may be to “run” it as a Con game, but that’s not, ideally, where I’d like to do something the first time.

  1. I scheduled it with the Gauntlet but when it came to the rules I struggled to get my head round them or how I’d explain it to the players. I looked for support online but found very little so had to abandon it. I’d love to play to see how it’s meant to be run though.

  3. I have played and enjoyed it, but it was an early version. However, if I remember my conversations with Joshua right, he intends that or is comfortable with play groups working out among themselves certain (maybe intentional) rules ambiguities.

The game I played was 3 people using an early text with Joshua hopping between us and another table, observing but refusing to answer questions. He told us to decide what we thought certain things meant.

I could be misrepresenting his intent though.

  5. Robert Bohl I wonder how much of your experience was Joshua A.C. Newman trying to keep from biasing the test. I own the printed game available through glyphpress and it is written in the game’s voice – which is both part of the allure and the barrier.

Reading it you KNOW what the game should sound and feel like, but that kind of makes digging out mechanics and figuring out when to apply them hard. In reading Joshua’s blog entries on it, the mechanics and social space are intended to interact seamlessly. Or that’s what I took away from the variety of posts. The one I linked here is VERY illustrative and I’ve got my head wrapped around it, I think. Not enough that I want to run this at a con for strangers as my first try though.

  7. Graham Meinert i fully agree with a lot of this. Not only is it hard to parse out the rules, it’s also hard to teach them to others without just saying “here read this”
