I need some help coming up with the name of a world I’m building. I’ll give some exposition, in case it helps anyone out.

It’s basically a fantasy world at the point of, for lack of a better description, discovering South America and trying to settle it. My setting takes place in the colonial town of Irongate on the edge of a vast jungle. The people there left the old world about a century ago because of how crowded it was and the quickly dwindling resources. There was a melting pot Empire in the old world, which is the Empire that sent them over, along with some other, more racially separated groups which have also established some remote colonies on the new continent.

Dragons are rare now, though a rare, more humanoid race of reptillians exist which claim them as ancestors. There are dragon ruins on the new continent, as well as races that still cling to worshipping dragons even though they aren’t present.

I know that’s not much to go on, but I am coming up with nothing as far as a name for the overall world. Any help is appreciated!

  1. Continent of Terror. The Dragonlands. Darkest [placename]. River of Death (assumes an Amazon R. analogue). Land of Mists. Fragile Frontier. The Vermillion Coast.

  3. Name of continent by dominant indigenous culture=Hamacamapa

Name of continent in language of the Empire: Amacara

Hamacamapa is an anagram of “Pachamama”, the Incan Earth goddess. I am a big fan of anagrams as a mnemonic and inspirational device.

“Amacara” is the derived form of the attempts by the imperials to pronounce Hamacamapa; basically Amacaba => Amacava => Amacara as the glide replaced the fricative. Plus, it sounds a bit like America and so is suggestive 🙂

  5. Catherine Ramen That’s a cool method. I was trying to skim off roots like Pangea (Panjia), Dragonland (Draclynd), Pandora’s Box (Pandara), Scoria (Scorya), Igneous (Igna), Volcanic (Volkar). The trick, as you noted, is to suggest without directly invoking. If one can manage to pull in cool baggage without literally making the reader think of a thing; that’s a win.

  7. Ray Otus Yeah, I developed it in my last (and final 🙂 ) Pathfinder campaign–my kinda sorta Greek culture had city names like Sethna and Apstar which helped me remember them since I knew they were anagrams of Athens and Sparta; but if I didn’t tell you, you’d probably not notice.

I’m working on a little space opera hack and editing a list of sci-fi names, so the derivation of Amacara was a natural extension of doing things like Timothy turning into Dimofi 🙂

  9. Catherine Ramen Oh yeah, that’s gold. Nice way to invisibly embed your GM notes! 🙂 I can see myself doing things like Egrit’s Cave (just “stirge” backwards because it’s full of … well you get it.)
