In today’s Dungeon World session, I had a character retire to safety after reaching Level 10 and finishing the campaign. This is the first time this has ever happened in the hundreds of sessions of DW I have run. In fact, only a tiny handful of player characters in my games have even made it to Level 9 (fewer than 5); most are killed or stop seeing play around Level 7. I am excited for the player in question who achieved this milestone (Fraser Simons) but I’ll tell you what: I threw everything I had at that character. I was determined to send him to the Black Gate before he could retire to safety, and almost did, but the sly use of a Fighter move by Maria Rivera forced a re-roll on the monster’s attack damage that saved his bacon. It was a very exciting moment.

Any one have tips for making Dungeon World more deadly? I feel like my players always steam roll any challenges I throw at them.

Deadlier: use Sagas of the Icelanders harm rules instead of hp.

Aaron Griffin I can’t seem to find any specifics without buying the PDF. Care to summarize them?

I don’t know: dying never seems to be a problem in Gauntlet DW games… Maimings are even more common…

I was expecting more like tips towards GMing than hacking the rules. I guess is a matter of using hard moves, more often than soft ones, no?

Deadlier: take damage + hard/soft move: some situations cause damage no mater the roll ” you want to dive into the acid pit to grab the micguffin?, well roll dex to see how quick you can be about it”

Was it a happy retirement? Given how already spotty memory, I imagine he’ll fit right in at the care centre. :/
