I love it! Maybe I’ll make a shrine or something for mine.

James Ryan Yeah!
James Ryan Yeah!
Thank you!
I await the offerings of cowards everywhere. In return, I shall show them a glimpse of their fate. It will always be up to them to make it useful.

Thanks – this is awesome!
Inspired by James Ryan’s idea, here’s a compendium class I threw together this afternoon (hope nobody minds me posting it – apologies for the length). None of the moves are all that original, but I had fun putting it together and look forward to introducing it to my players!
(KEEPER OF) THE PAIN MANIFESTO
0 Weight
A sheaf of papers, shoved in a manila envelope, wrapped in a rubber band.
When you meditate on the truth of the Pain Manifesto, the next time you level up you may choose this move and become its Keeper:
WISDOM IN PAIN
“318. Wisdom in pain. – There is as much wisdom in pain as in pleasure: like pleasure, pain is one of the prime species-preserving forces. If it weren’t, it would have perished long ago: that it hurts is no argument against it – it is its essence. […]”
When you take damage and embrace the pain, you may take +1d4 damage (ignoring armor). If you do, gain WIS hold.
When you have the move Wisdom in Pain, these count as class moves for you; you can choose from them when you level up:
PULL IN THE SAILS
“[…] In pain I hear the captain’s command: ‘Pull in the sails!’ The hardy seafarer ‘Man’ must have learned to adjust the sails in a thousand ways; otherwise he would have gone under too quickly and the ocean would have swallowed him too soon. […]”
When you find wisdom in pain, spend 1 hold to take +1 forward on your Last Breath.
LIVE WITH REDUCED ENERGY
“[…] We have to know how to live with reduced energy, too: as soon as pain sounds its safety signal, it is time for such a reduction – some great danger, some storm is approaching, and we do well to ‘inflate ourselves’ as little as possible. […]”
When you find wisdom in pain, spend 1 hold to heal damage the next time you make camp equal to your maximum HP.
PROUD, BELLICOSE, AND HAPPY
“[…] True, there are people who hear exactly the opposite command when great pain approaches and who never look as proud, bellicose, and happy as when a storm is nearing – yes, pain itself gives them their greatest moments! […]”
When you find wisdom in pain, spend 1 hold to take +1 forward against what caused you pain.
PAINBRINGER
“[…] They are the heroic human beings, the great painbringers of humanity, those few or rare ones who need the same apology as pain itself – and truly, they should not be denied this! They are eminently species-preserving and species-enhancing forces, if only because they resist comfort and do not hide their nausea at this type of happiness” (Nietzsche, The Gay Science, Book 4, Aphorism 318).
When you find wisdom in pain, spend 1 hold to deal damage to what caused you pain equal to your level.
Thanks – this is awesome!
