Episode 48 of Discern Realities is here!

Episode 48 of Discern Realities is here! After a series of “fancy” episodes featuring guests and contests, DR 48 is a return to our tried-and-true formula. In this episode:

-We discuss the mystery of Lord Caspian Gal and some associated narrative fuckery.

-We announce Gauntlet Con, and discuss a number of other Gauntlet happenings.

-We use the Bend Bars, Lift Gates move to have a larger conversation about the interplay between playbook moves and basic moves.

-We present the Library of the Wordfey, a set piece and custom move.

-We continue the story of St. Evelyn the White.

Enjoy! (and let us know what you think in the comments)

  1. For me BB/LG is a above all a flag from the player that they want to see their character breaking chains and shackles, holding descending ceilings and portcullis, breaking out of a cell etc. It never gets old and I just love the grin on my players face when he describes the action. It´s also one of my favorite fighter moves because we played loads of D&D when we were kids.

  3. Thoroughly enjoyed the episode. Don’t get me wrong, mixing it up is always fun. But the core of Discern Realities is Jason and Davids voices doing a dance about Dungeony topics, and I’ve missed that. And coming back from a business trip with failed gaming prospects, it helped me refocus and get excited again.

  5. sorry for late post.

I would add that moves like BBLG gives the player more justification to belive that his character can do something that is just silly for anyone else. I always point to the Conan the Destroyer film (which is the most D&D movie ever) where conan lifts a stone slab. anyone else attempting it would be silly and possibly trigger a golden opotunity.

simularly trying to intimidate the charging 12 foot tall demon is silly unless you have something like the paladins “i am the law”. or picpoketing the captain of the gaurds in the middle of a fight without the theifs tricks of the trade.

these moves signal to the player and the dm that this is the area where that character should be especialy epic.

  7. Sorry for the late post, but you guys make mention of some fun ideas that DR could do for GauntletCon and what about like a funnel world with some folks and surviving characters make their way into the DR actual play? Probably as fodder, but that could be a fun way to involve the community in something we love so much. 😀
