Gauntleteers!

Gauntleteers!

Gauntleteers! Put something on my radar. A new game, a new module, an interesting game design movement. Tell me what is awesome or interesting about it. There are no right or wrong answers here, and feel free to put your own stuff, too.

Thanks!

  1. I ran a game of Troika! on Sunday and my players had an overall positive experience of the Initiative Bag.

Each player has two chits in the initiative bag, and each enemy has at least one chit. There is a special chit that marks the end of the round. GM pulls out chits to determine combat order randomly. Because there is a round ending chit, the round might end without certain players acting at all, or they could act twice.

I think it was fun to play in a combat heavy one-shot, but I would be hesitant to incorporate it into one of my campaigns.

  3. I am generally not an osr guy. But I keep strange hours and it is difficult for me to find a group to play with. My friend Vincent Harper introduced me to Scarlet Heroes. It’s a 1on1 fantasy rpg that has a terrific mechanic that allows super easy conversion of any DnD module so one character can do the whole module solo but still quite deadly.

  5. I don’t know if it is a “Game Design Movement” but the Games on Trial G+ group’s RPG Book Club (basically an editing/review group) is proceeding full steam ahead and is now on its third round.

  7. I gave The Nightmares Underneath a read and it is TOTALLY up your alley Jason, if you hadn’t checked it out yet, you should! Johnstone always has awesome art selection, this fantasy Middle East artwork is really well chosen, imo.

“The Nightmares Underneath is an old school role-playing game with a strong horror theme, set in a fantasy Middle East where dungeons are invading nightmares intent on the destruction of civilization.

In the Kingdoms of Dreams, all is right with the world—except for one thing. Even though the Law has triumphed over the powers of Chaos, banishing idolatry and superstition in favour of science and reason, humanity is still threatened by a dangerous, otherworldly force. The Realm of Nightmares invades the physical world, sending incursions in the form of dungeon to undermine and destroy society.”

  9. I’d like to vote for my game, Infinite Galaxies, which is going to be a Kickstarter campaign this October. It has been in development for 2+ years and has been played by hundreds of people (or at least, a hundred by my count).

Infinite Galaxies is a sci fi action-adventure game based on PbtA and features a lot of familiar tropes, including spaceships, aliens, robots, and laser guns, and also features a very robust advancement system.

I encourage anyone interested to download the pre release materials at http://www.infinitegalaxies.net. Everything you need to play the game is available there!

I was also thinking about possibly offering Infinite Galaxies on the Gauntlet Hangout games, sometime in September.

  11. I guess I’ll plug my own thing: #Stonetop

What’s awesome about it? It’s slow-burn Dungeon World, where you’re the heroes of a small isolated town rather than wandering murderhobos. Where magic is weird and subtle and poorly understood. Where going to hunt a couple cave bears for food because your kith and kin are starving is as likely an adventure as exploring the nearby ruins.

It’s not done yet, but it’s playable, and I’m always looking for playtesters and feedback. Hit the hashtag to see more.

  13. Kind of off topic, but MAN would I love to run/play a game in this setting; have you seen AMC’s Into the Badlands? We’re still in season one (on Netflix), but the cinematography, costuming, and blend of cars/guns with horses/swords is just gorgeous!

  15. I can’t +1 Maxime Lacoste enough on SotDL. It’s rapidly expanding, and they’re currently working on a Freeport Companion. Despite being on the same crunch level as 5e D&D, the amount of dedication Robert Schwalb has put into this game alone is worth it.
