  1. For my part, I like small, agile, theify people. I like the family strain that comes in from the hobbit part of the lineage. I love the trickster / alien-idea-of-property that comes in from the kender part of the lineage.

    Also, I tend to prefer kender-style bodies (that is, small people of average human proportions) to the hobbitish round-and-furry thing.

  3. I kind of like the warrows from the Iron Tower trilogy. They’re similar to halflings but when you put a bow in their hands they become death machines.

  5. I liked the Hobbit novels. I’ll always have a soft spot for the Bilbo types. (Frodo too emo). People that seem outwardly soft and innocent who love their creature comforts (elevenses anyone?); but have a core of iron that when pushed to the sticking place end up saving the planet.

    I’m not a fan of the Kender, and almost took offense at including them in with halfling/hobbits.

  9. The author also took the “light step” feature a little further and had them use thorn walls (that they could easily traverse) to protect their homeland. It’s fair to criticize the series as highly derivative but I really enjoyed it anyway.

  11. I guess I like the classic Hobbit – the person who is semi-modern but stuck in a world with heroic values. The soft little folk who are pulled out of their lives and into adventure, who have to get by because of cleverness and psychological strength rather than physical.

    I also like the image of a light, agile, lethal fighter. For halflings, I like Hobbits on the one hand, or cannibalistic Dark Sun halflings on the other.

  13. I always loved the Kender’s bag, especially the mechanic for it in the RPG (though I don’t remember what system). Roll 1d100 for the random thing that you pull out of your pouch. Almost as much fun as a Wand of Wonder!

  15. Edward Hickcox – I love that, too. For the game I’m working on (Demihumans), I’ve taken the Chopper’s move from Apocalypse World to find something in your saddlebags and given it to the Halfling playbook. 🙂

  17. Food obsessed lil Englishmen. If and when I play them, they all tend to be interested more in what the next towns local delicacy is then what monsters they will be fighting. Once I had one that was interested in what the local monsters taste like.

  19. Jennifer Erixon if you just had halflings and gnomes and goblins, then they would no longer be “tiny”, they would be normal. And we’d be giants.

    Hey, wait a minute, maybe we are all hobbits, and giants are “normal” human sized? Which would make halflings => quarterlings or eighthings…
