In a PbP game of DW, we are currently fighting a goddess.

In a PbP game of DW, we are currently fighting a goddess. The GM made this custom move and I wanted to see what the community thought of it.

Invincible

When you are so foolish as to attack a goddess directly, without taking advantage of an established opening, she deftly counters your feeble efforts and… (GM picks 1)

– Launches a lethal counterattack, what do you do?

– Dances past/around/away from/over to you, faster than you can blink

– Flicks your weapon from your grasp, sends you tumbling, stuns you, and/or otherwise shows her disdain for the inconsequential threat you pose

  1. Hah! Funny… I actually wrote that move (or at least that version of it).

As I said on that thread:

you could technically get that with just a monster move or two, like “_Counter all but the most inspired of attacks_.”

I do like having it written as a player facing move, though. Not so much because I would show it to the players, but rather to give myself permission to do that stuff in the heat of the moment.

So, yeah… it’s totally just a GM note. Not something meant for player’s eyes, even though it’s written that way, because letting them read it would be the best way to ensure to that it never came up in play.

  3. On the other hand, showing it to the players makes things very clear: This isn’t your average Orc. You need to use the information you’ve gained about this goddess and act intelligently.

  5. You could handle it without the move. Give her the special quality of “Unbeatable in Single Combat” and if they don’t try to attack her together or give each other openings. A “Counter Attack” move would cover most of the stuff in that move. You could add “Show Them Their Lack of Skill” to allow her to show off and make them look inferior.

Now I’m not ragging on the move, it would be alright if you show your players the move, since it can clue them in on how deadly their enemy is and push them towards teamwork. Did you dislike the move or think it was unnecessary on any way?

  7. We had a situation similar to this in a game where the enemy was clearly too powerful to fight. One player attacked it, and was giving the benefit of his sword shattering. He was not permitted to roll the attack so it was clear that the monster was immune to ordinary attacks. When another person tried, the GM took it as a golden opportunity and made a move. In neither attack by the players was the player permitted to make a move. The absolute terror of being told not to roll, and then just watching what happened as they ineffectually attacked was pretty amazing.
