Hey Gauntleteers!

A day or so ago I asked you lovely folks about your thoughts on rape in RPGs. I asked this question in a few places on social media and had some deep conversations about it. The results? A blog post!

Content Warning: The article deals with rape, rape culture, abuse, and has pictures of pop culture references to rape.

  1. This is a really powerful piece of writing, Kate. Like I said in our Slack, some people will have strong negative reactions to it, and they’ll have good reasons for those negative reactions. But I think this is a bold challenge to the orthodoxy surrounding difficult content in games, and your voice here is credible and evenhanded. Nice job.

  3. I’m in Vincent Florio’s boat. I’ve never had rape come up in games. I almost always play a female character and no one bats an eye. If someone were to mention rape, I would still not have a problem since my character isn’t real.

1st thank you. I like to think in general but I have a tendency not to pounder on the heavy stuff. I self preserving mechanism maybe…

Its nice to have my head ripped out of the sandhole once in a while. Im in the process of internalizing youre blog right now. Its a lot to process.

My wife was abused in her teens by a group of young “friends” in her own house. We talked about it a few times. Shes ok now because it happenned many many years ago. I know its still a part of her tough and she was forever changed by the experience.

2nd bringing rape to the table. I was never raped. Im a male. A potentiel abuser. Thankfully I was raised to be a gentlemen by a mother who believed strongly in womens place in society. So if rape or abuse is proposed at the table it will make me uncomfortable.

In part because I lack experience, In part because I dont want to step on toes by mistake. I will go all-in though if everyone is ready to try it out using youre excellent guidelines.

You are right. This is a good time to be a gamer. Story games have the potentiel to take us out of the dungeons and into much more dangerous places. To our inner selves and the way we think and feel about difficult subjects.

  7. “The rape itself isn’t the part that generally wants to get played out. It’s everything around the rape. It’s what happens to the victim after, how they are treated, and how they respond. It’s going to be more so about them, their movement forward, and their actions around it.”

Very much agree with this. Good article, will be sharing with other players if the subject comes up at the table.
