How do you find a play-by-post game?

I haven’t taken part in play-by-post since pre-puberty back on the Neopets roleplaying boards. These days I find myself without a regular local group and I’ve been starting to dip into playing online (thanks to the Gauntlet Hangouts community). Timezones mean I can’t slip into most Gauntlet games, so I’m thinking play-by-post might be a good way to supplement my habit… but I have absolutely no idea how to start.

Is there a site or community online somewhere that would be a fair fit for someone with Gauntlet-y tastes? Any hint or tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  1. There are lots of sites available. I tried Tavern Keeper (for story games, lots of Fate) a couple years ago. There are lots of games to choose from but the trick seems to be in finding one that won’t fall apart within a couple weeks.

  3. Kate Bullock I’ll check it out. Thanks heaps!

Matt Bohnhoff I can see that there are a lot of sites available, but knowing which of those to check out and which to pass on is half the challenge so far. A game falling apart after just a couple of weeks is exactly what I’d like to try and avoid. Thanks for recommending Tavern Keeper; I’ll be sure to give it a look.

  5. hey neko cam, PBP is an awesome way to play across the world. I’ll keep you on my shortlist for the next game I hear starting up. Tavern Keeper is my preferred forum, but I rarely pick up random games because as Matt Bohnhoff says, they don’t last.

In the new year, I’ll probably run a Gauntlet PBP game like I did this year, and I’ll make sure you get an invite!

  7. Richard Rogers Is the AW PbP that Jason Cordova mentioned open for spectators? If so, I’d like to peek in and see how these things work in the wild – especially if it’s as entertaining an example as it sounds

  9. I’ve been running a Castles & Crusades PBP at rpol.net – RolePlay onLine! Welcome to RPoL for a few months and have only good things to say about the site. I haven’t tried PBP on any other sites, so maybe my praise is ignorant. I am a little leery of attempted a PbtA game using PBP. PbtA games are heavily built on a dialogue between the players and GM. The slow play speed of PBP could really, really bog down a PbtA game unless the players and GM are willing and able to post multiple times per day.

  11. hey Derek Jones, I run almost exclusively PBtA games via PBP and it works incredibly well (if you run it Comic Book style). It takes some shifting in priorities and quicker posts with a more active MC, but it’s really fun.

  13. neko cam We are slowly building a slack community that kind of serves as a pool of PbP players and breeding ground for folks to start games. Let me know if you are interested and I’ll give you an invite. Open to all interested!

  15. I really like the idea of Storium, but I’m not in love with the actual game mechanics of it. I think Tavern Keeper gives you a lot more flexibility to work with. I know some other people PbP on the RPG geek forums, on Paizo, and on RPOL. I’m used to private forums and TK, me.

Richard Rogers is the man when it comes to PbP! He ran my first-ever PbP game (yikes) almost three years ago now, and it was incredibly rewarding and awesome. We’ve played a bunch of other goodness together, also.

Saffire Rainbo I’m curious about your mechanics- do you have something I can read?

Timothy Bennett Would you mind shooting me a Slack invite also?

Short version – Split the party often. Lots of punchy, exciting prose. One world. Many stories.

One killer for PBP is the long wait times based on differing post rates and times.

As an MC, I think of each PC and their story as a separate comic book series. I’m more of Editorial, keeping each “book” event in context of the shared world and bouncing actions and ramifications across all of the PC’s stories.

Scenes where multiple PCs are together are few and far between, but they’re my Big Events and Crossovers where things get hectic and then we split them back off into their own “books” again with aftermath and the like.

    Does that make sense?

  19. Saffire Rainbo I’m curious – and I certainly don’t mind some homework and hangouts are fine when I don’t have to be up at 1am for them. Please keep me in mind and I’ll keep an eye out for your posting more info in Feb. Thanks.

Timothy Bennett Sounds like a great resource. Please do send that Slack invite my way too 🙂
