I have a question regarding Wizards in World of Dungeons. I know its a popular game here at the Gauntlet and figure the best people to ask.

So, how does the Wizard work exactly?

I understand they start with Summon, and that it is required to bring about a spirit or demon whom does the magical stuff, but what about Command? Must the wizard also have the Command Ability to even take advantage of the now summoned demon? And if they don’t, then why choose Command at all?

  1. There are times when just summoning would be enough. Maybe you have information to trade, or the spirits answer to get their freedom. Maybe you summon a fire elemental in a palace to burn in down as you, yourself, flee. Stuff like that. I do see command as different. Better not let it out of the circle of summoning if you can’t command it! Another form of summoning use would be awakening the spirit within a magical item to learn its secrets or exploit its power. I am very explicit when I run WoD that all wizardry is fueled by spirits/elementals/demons (sort of like Ron Edwards’ Sorcerer). And all of them are dangerous, if given to much freedom.

  3. Under the Magic heading, it says that a wizard can command a summoned spirit to perform one action, which implies to me that you don’t need Command for the spirits you’re familiar with.

What Command is for, to me, is for negotiating with sprits that the wizard doesn’t already command: the demon those cultists summoned, the white stag spirit who guards the eastern woods, the mournful ghost who haunts the old stone bridge and so on. Mostly I’d call it a signal to the GM that you’d like there to spooky stuff to deal with.

  5. You’re right James Etheridge. Good catch. I forgot that 1 command was part of summoning. I do give them that one. It’s probably been 18 mos. since I ran WoD.
