Anyone know of any transhumanism PbtA hacks?

Anyone know of any transhumanism PbtA hacks? There’s this big list of hacks, but no mention of Transhumanism. Maybe one of the ones in the Sci-Fi section someone is more familiar with is actually a transhuman setting?

In particular, I like the settings of David Pulver’s Transhuman Space (GURPS) and Bruce Sterling’s Schismatrix novel. And Eclipse Phase RPG has always fascinated, as has Nova Praxis (FATE).

  1. Seems like transhumanism might be hard for PbtA to do, since PbtA tends to emphasize character archetypes, while transhumanism tends to emphasize character plasticity.

  3. Seems like a transhumanism-for-transhumanism’s-sake PbtA game would need playbooks centered on more abstract concepts like character drives, goals, or arcs. Most of the transhuman tech would be in the basic or special moves, and class moves would probably need to be about the psychology of how different personalities are affected by transhuman tech.

  5. Jim Jones and Jeremy Downey when I get home tonight or maybe tomorrow I’ll try to take a look through my Eclipse phase and Transhuman Space (THS) books to see what kind of archetypes they provide. I’d see those as being the first pass at playbooks.

But Jeremy, your point is also interesting that Transhumanism, by definition is all about changing what it means to be human. So having a well defined playbook may go against the spirit of transhuman movement. Probably why generic systems like FATE or GURPS were the vehicles that I know of best for that type of fiction.

But does a PbtA game require playbooks?

  7. Maybe Masks could provide some ideas here. Characters go through several changes throughout play, and the playbooks aren’t defined necessarily by how your character does something but rather how their actions impact the story.
