So I have some friends I want to run Dungeon World for, but one of them has some reservations. We played Apocalypse World in the past, and there were some mistakes I made in running it, so he was turned off of totally unplanned play. He basically wants to be railroaded, or at least have that sort of adventure/campaign structure as a backdrop for the game. I just have the main DW book; does anyone know of any pick-up resources which could help me provide this without a lot of preplanning? Or should I get busy writing my own using fronts and grim portents?

  1. I like the Monster Manuals. There are 3 of them, and I think adventures naturally can be seen from the contents of the books. evocative art, great monsters and backdrops for the monsters. We talk about them on Discern Realities, but I don’t recall the specific episodes right now.

  3. Terrors of the ancient world has some cool resources. But you might consider trying a second time. If you know how you messed up then you can do better. I have a lot of boardgame regret where we messed it up and no one wants to give the game another shot after we know what to do. Or worse we try again with I’ll considered house rule fixes that end up making it worse

  5. Phillip WesselsWas the play unplanned? By the time a player has answered GM questions after introductions, they should have provided tons of seeds for adventure ideas. In my experience, the first session is entirely planned around all those fictional flags from a character sheet.

Perhaps the player didn’t buy in to this conversation, and that process of asking questions and building a map can be expanded instead. If that’s not the case and a player ‘wants’ to be railroaded, they’re probably playing the wrong type of game.

  7. I did a clumsy “while they are doing that scene we just went through, you are going to have been doing this scene we’re doing right now”. Which would have been fine except they were too close within the fiction and we had to steer away from crossing paths.

  9. That’s not too bad. A lot of times players will have to chose actions other then the obvious or optimum. Maybe because it doesn’t make sense, is boring or doesn’t fit their character. An out of character: they are over there doing that. This is your scene over here, try another way” should be fine. If they realy don’t want to get focus then ok they rejoin the party. Maybe keep it open that they could have done something off screen in case they have a good idea later
