  1. Thanks for the mention! (My vanity knows no bounds, so I live for this shit. lol) Also, THANK YOU for bringing up monster moves and the 7-9 result. Monsters are waaaaay better in DW than they are in typical fantasy RPGs. I love me a good monster move. They make battles so much more interesting and scary. And it’s been settled in another thread, but yeah … snail flail was a real beastie that appeared in the Fiend Folio.

  3. The segment on Hack & Slash was a revelation for me. This means I can finally try out my idea to run a full session without access to the “Deal Damage” move.

  5. Hey, again a great episode! Thank you for creating all the great content here on the gauntlet. I will be running DW for the first time soon and got a bit confused about the Hack & Slash Move you discussed today. For me it seems harsh to take the characters arm for a partial success, that is a really bad fictional position. Would you think its appropiate to set up the “arm removal” with a soft move? Then the character can react to the threat of losing his arm and might also be more ok with this result.

  7. Julian Plaga another thing to think about is once a character loses an arm, how cool it will be when they find a way to get it back! DW can be an epic place where magic and rituals abound! I once played a Druid who lost his leg then spent days studying the way a caterpillar goes into its cocoon and returns as a butterfly… Then the Druid spent the time between sessions as a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly. When I returned to my man shape, I was whole once more!

  9. I once lost my legs while playing a paladin (had them replaced with fish legs if I remember right). That set my on a new quest to seek a mad tailor to magically make me new ones. But that wasn’t due to a monster move…. purple lotus powder is a hell of a thing to get caught up in.

  11. The first instance of limb loss in Dungeon World came from the party’s wizard trying to retrieve a book from a trapped pedestal. She wanted it, so I said she could retrieve it, but the blade would catch her, or she could let go of the book, but the blade would cut the book in two. She chose to retrieve it, so she got her hand cut off. The Lich that sent her to fetch it put her hand back on, but it was basically undead, so pale and lifeless looking, but functional. She hid it the best she could, but eventually they helped a druid grove and as a reward, she got to put her hand in a hole in The Great Tree. It closed up for a bit and when it opened again her hand was made of a beautiful living wood instead. It was a good thing too, since the Lich was using it to spy on the party without their knowledge.

Another cool one was when the Barbarian got caught by a Devourer and was going to die, but he cut off his own arm that it had him by. He ended up getting an arm made with a mix of magic and technology we call golemech in our campaign world.

I think all the other instances have been while a druid is shapeshifted. Which I always say goes away when they turn back to normal.

  13. I went back and listened to it. 28 dominico Castafiel sees a face in his pocket. And then 29 starts back with Ramshackle. I thought maybe I missed Dominico passing through the black gate. Hope we get to hear more of his story at some point.

  15. Great episode, as usual. I do have a nit to pick, though!

In the discussion of Hack & Slash, you talk about a sahuagin biting off a dude’s arm as “not necessarily hit point damage.” And how the orc took Lucero’s eye and hamstrung him, but Lucero never took any hit point damage in that fight.

In the spirit of reading the text of the game closely, check out page 165, under Making You Move (2nd paragraph):

Note that “deal damage” is a move, but other moves may include damage as well. When an ogre flings you against a wall you take damage as surely as if he had smashed you with his fists.

I’m totally down with “use a monster a move on a 7-9 or a miss, don’t just deal damage.” But–per the text–a monster move that would be damaging should also deal damage.

(Obviously, though: play how you want and how works for you!)

  17. Jeremy Strandberg In the actual game where the sahuagin bit off the character’s arm, I don’t actually recall whether HP damage was done or not (it was ages ago). In the case of Lucero’s eye, I wouldn’t do HP damage because I don’t think there’s a chance the wound would kill him in the middle of the fight. It would hurt like hell, warranting a -1forward or ongoing, but I don’t think it would take a guy like Lucero down.
