Folks, listening to Discern Realities Episode 33, and I have to say that the Flail Snail is a real monster from 1E AD&D. I can take a picture of the entry and post tonight if anyone is interested.

  1. Ha! You learn something new every day. I just researched the matter to figure out why I didn’t know this. I was a 2E kid, and the flail snail wasn’t included in the main Monstrous Compendium (2E’s version of the MM). It was part of a Greyhawk addition, and I never ran Greyhawk.

  3. It’s a snail, though, right? So what does it do, lay in wait then slowly slither out and say, “Hold still while I flail you!”? fearsome. Must be why I never encountered them…

  5. p. 38 of the Fiend Folio, don’t think it was Erol Otus who did it. “in ancient days of yore, the rapacious flail snail crushed it’s way through innocent villagers and trained warriors alike, devouring and rampaging throughout the region. Many tried their mettle against the stalwart foe only to realize, it was only looking for a whataburger. A humble squire led the creature to the nearest one and it was ne’er seen again!”

  7. Yep. Fiend Folio. And I think Rich was referring to me, not Erol. I did a take on the flail snail for Inktober this year. Some think flail snails are “lame” but I think they are pretty cool. You have to imagine them big, their shells almost impenetrable (outside of siege engines), and their heads constantly banging away in front of them on rubbery, extensible stalks like some horrific threshing machine. 🙂
