I just had a great hangouts session with my players after finishing the first “session” of our Apocalypse World Play-by-Post. We talked for more than two hours about the characters, the story and our experience playing. It felt so good to actually talk about it after only writing posts and chatting on Slack for weeks and weeks.

For people who have played or play in a PbP right now, do you schedule catchup video chats? How important is that live conversation to you?

  1. Btw, I stole my play-by-post Hangouts catchup idea from Richard Rogers, used it with Tor Droplets and others for my play-by-post, and here we are!

  3. I have not been able to do anything like this recently. It sounds super useful, and more importantly, fun. However; the main reason i play pbp rather than hangouts stops me from doing these catchup chats. It proves unnecessary, but highly useful when it can be done

  5. Robert Doe, that is a fair point. I struggle with awkward timezones and a busy life so I can appreciate how PbP becomes a necessary replacement for hangout games for some people. I only had mobile data for a really long time myself.

But if it’s possible to meet up, even for just 30 minutes to say hello, I think it will be really valuable. I remember that some of the other players in my first PbP never joined the hangout sessions and I worry that they missed out on some of the connection the rest of us had.

  7. I also want to acknowledge that for some people there’s safety in hiding behind an avatar and only communicating in writing. Maybe it’s their way to enjoy the hobby without the discrimination, judgement or awkwardness they might experience at the table or over hangouts.

I only picked players I already knew and play with online, but I think it’s a good idea for GMs to check in with their players and make sure they don’t get isolated by being the only one who doesn’t come to hangouts, whether it’s by choice or practical limitations.
