Hey guys, I have some not-great news.

Hey guys, I have some not-great news.

Hey guys, I have some not-great news. Meetup wants to close down Gauntlet Hangouts, despite the fact we have been loyal customers for several years, and have paid them hundreds of dollars for their service. Their issue is the fact that it is a primarily online thing, and the purpose of Meetup is, and I quote, “to bring people together in real life to do what matters to them most.”

I’m waiting to hear back about getting some kind of exception to the policy. If I don’t hear back by tomorrow, we will be switching to another service. I’m letting you guys know so you can be ready to make the change.

  1. Well we used to use g+ events. There was always a big divide with some players only being aware of meetup and others only being aware of g+. You will probably need to inform the meetup separately in case there are still holdouts

  3. Wow that is unfortunate. If you are giving them the money I’m not sure why they care how you use the product. That’s some strange stuff there.

  5. Dang that suuucks. Can you just like put in a couple events that are physical, like for game cons and just have people who are physically going to that con say yeah, I’m going too and then all the gauntlet people would know who was going or not to said con as well? Like a Metatopia event, GenCon, etc.

  7. Jason Cox If there was some legal or business reason for their decision, I could almost understand it. But their reason is purely philosophical, and I think that’s BS.

  9. Jason Cordova Yes it is. Also, in my case, I can barely get anything going in-person, due to scheduling, but the online function has allowed me to “meet people and do something I love which I otherwise would not be able to do.” Can we fight 🔥 with 🔥 on this one?

  11. Jason Cordova this really sucks. Anyway, I love the Gauntlet community, regardless of the scheduling service it uses. If at all possible, please choose a service that supports time zone differences.

  13. I know other organized play groups (D&D RPGA, PFS) and conventions use warhorn.net.

It’s not the best interface, but has the ability to:

    -list game system

    -list synopsys of game

-automate a sign-up for number of players

    -handle alternate players

I have not looked at it in years, but, the last time I used it, it didn’t have the ability to host forums for discussions like Meetup did, but maybe that could be handled by a link to a G+ discussion.

  15. Jason Cordova, my apologies, I meant that you should show off your existing commitment to both online and offline meetings. It shouldn’t matter (IMO) that some / most of The Gauntlet activity takes place online, if a significant element utilises MeetUp to arrange FTF meets.

  17. I wanted to make a sarcastic comment about how online interaction is not “real life”, as if we were in some sort of Matrix, but I didn’t think it would be helpful. I don’t know anything about event organizing but I did find this startup that might be interesting: https://www.mobilize.io

I don’t know how the pricing compares to meetup, but they did mention that slack integration was “coming soon”.
