Podcast brainstorming

Despite helping produce RPG podcasts, I don’t actually get to listen to very many. I have a few shows I try to catch every now and then, but the Gauntlet consumes most of the time I can dedicate to RPG-related activities.

I’m always thinking about expanding our offerings, but I need your help finding an existing podcast that fits the following criteria:

1. Is complementary to the shows we are already doing. In other words, it covers the games we already cover, but in a different way; or it covers other types of games in the indie space (such as OSR/DIY, Fate, etc..).

2. Has established the ability to release episodes on a regular basis, or could do so if it had some help.

3. Is small enough in terms of audience (less than 1,000 listeners) that it could benefit from being part of the Gauntlet family. So, obviously, please don’t tell me about anything on One Shot or Friends at the Table, which seem to be the only two other podcasts people listen to. I’m looking for small shows trying to find an audience.

4. Is actually a good show.

In the alternative, if you have been thinking about an idea for a new podcast, get in touch with me over Hangouts chat. Pocket-Sized Play got started because the hosts got in touch with me, we began the conversation, and those conversations eventually turned into a show. There is no guarantee something like that will happen again, but it doesn’t hurt to brainstorm a bit.

  1. I’ve enjoyed Narrative Control (http://narrativecontrol.libsyn.com/) – it’s a podcast about sitting down with RPG designers and indie RPG personalities and discussing the various different things that make games work, whether that’s things done by the designer, GMs, community organisations etc. They’ve recently had Luke Crane, Avery McDaldno and John Harper on, for example.

  3. I wonder if Riverhouse Games podcast would be something that would benefit? Taylor has some good stuff, He has some AP episodes as well as a couple shows. One of them, the game closet is where he specifically interviews LGBT in the gaming community and talk about personal experience and or queer content in games. He has 2 others and the AP show, the Leviathan files, is them playing a fan made Mass Effect campaign.

  5. Jason Cordova are you looking for additions to your network or just allied shows?

For allied shows I am going to say Misdirected Mark. We are our own network, but MM is adjacent to all the games you play, weekly, and I think good, if I say so myself.

  7. Phil Vecchione Additions to our own network, but I have always thought MM and Gauntlet could do something interesting together. Heck, even if we just did some cross-hosting duties between our shows.

  9. Jason Cordova not exactly clear on what you’re after but since Becky plussed me in, we just kicked off Fictoplasm where we talk about a book (or other fiction) and then the games we want to run based on that book. We’ve done Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice and Garth Nix’s Sabriel so far (and I plugged one of my Beyond the Wall playsets for the Old Kingdom) and coming up we should have Mandel, Zelazny, Moorcock, Wolfe and others

  11. Full Metal RPG is pretty great. They cover OSR and other try games, very down to earth and unpretentious. To me it feels like friends talking about gaming, and they always keep it real. I’ve since actually made friends with the hosts and they are exactly the way they are on the cast. They are one of my favorites and they have a more gritty take on things, think a grittier Gauntlet.

  13. Eadwin Tomlinson Yeah, podfade is something I’m thinking about. We don’t have podfade in the Gauntlet because we have lots of procedures and systems in place to make sure things get done in a timely manner. I think those procedures and support systems are one of the things we can help a show with.

  15. Jason Cordova On a tangent: I’m with Max’s Minions, which is currently independent but looking to expand. Would you be willing to share those procedures and systems? I ask since you’re more experienced.

  17. Aaron B We can chat out of this thread, but it’s really just a product of a lot of people helping out. The editors have some nice procedures in place for working efficiently, I do a lot of the content planning and the QC, we’ve got a very neatly organized Slack, and we set deadlines and dates. We’re really just very organized, haha.

EDIT: we also have constant, ongoing conversations about format; we give each other lots of feedback; and just generally talk things out. It’s a very team-oriented process.

  19. Riverhouse Games does great stuff! I’d recommend it! And Taylor is an awesome dude.

My own Podcast (Stop, Hack, & Roll, which is about actively hacking games) is probably still WAY too small for it to be something that would make sense!

  21. Though I can’t speak to item 4 on your list, our podcast plays lots of indie games like the ones you talk about, we have been releasing weekly for over a year, and have 10’s of listeners. I don’t know about joining your collective or if you are even looking for another AP cast (with occasional discussions). At this point even a shout out on the gauntlet would be great for us. http://www.mentallyuntable.com
