Equipment Recommendation for Hangouts?

I’ve been listening to the podcasts since the beginning of the year and recently joined the community. Beginning next month, I’m going to start having some time available on Saturdays and want to try the hangout games. My computer is an old Apple mini and has no camera or mic. What equipment do I need to join a hangout?

Thanks for the help!

  1. Mostly I’m commenting here as a way of subscribing and seeing other people’s recommendations. I would say though that I think a headphone/mic combo doesn’t have to be expensive to be decent. I’ve had both a $20 Ink’d set of earbuds & mic like you would use with your cellphone and a $100 headset. The headset sounded good but not that much better than the earbuds, and it actually had a small creaking problem. (It would make a creaking sound if I adjusted the fit of the cans or the mic arm.) I would like to get one of those open-ear jobs that allow in ambient noise so I can hear my own voice a little and not feel so isolated when in a hangout.

  3. I use a Blacked out Yeti I got when it was on sale, I think around 100. And I just use normal headphones I had for around 40$. I haven’t had any complaints about the Yeti from players and I don’t have any problems on my end — but it might be a bit expensive for casual use.

  5. I use a $30 Logitech desktop camera mic combo from Walmart works great for gaming. I used to not use headphones to hear everyone but started to when I got roommates. They are cheap too, I believe I paid about $25 for them.

  7. Thanks, everyone! It sounds like I just need a camera and a headset/mic. I was afraid it might be more complicated. I will order something basic and try it out.

    Thanks, again!

  9. I bought a good pair of studio monitor headphones and it sent me into a spiral of expensive purchases because I could suddenly hear how terrible everything sounded on recordings.
