A bunch of random ideas

I’m always trying to think of new things for the Gauntlet. Here are some ideas, presented in no particular order. Feedback welcome.

1. Gauntlet ’77, a Hangouts series where we run through classic D&D modules using World of Dungeons.

2. Or Gauntlet ’77, a podcast that explores the present-day hobby from a historical standpoint.

3. Monstrous Compendium, an offbeat podcast where the hosts explore the origins and ecology of D&D monsters.

4. Dreams, a regular G+ post where we call out people for things they did that were cool and/or inspiring.

5. A podcast where people talk about how they got into the hobby (hat tip to Shane Liebling).

6. Publishing edited PbP games, with illustrations, possibly as part of a special edition of Codex.

7. Publishing a special edition of Codex featuring original material originating from Discern Realities, including contest entries.

8. Creating a rotating spot on The Gauntlet Podcast for active community members.

9. A game design contest with a cash prize.

10. Adding a “Community Favorite” to our annual Favorite Games episode of The Gauntlet Podcast (far and away the most popular episode we do).

11. A Designer of the Month feature where we highlight work done by a single designer, have an interview with them, schedule one of their games on Gauntlet Hangouts, and so forth.

  1. I would love 1, 2, 4, 9, 11. Also would like a podcast with a longer AP campaign show as well. Like the one-shot star wars one or something, but still edited just longer to satiate me between pocket sized play.

  3. 1 sounds great.

I like 4, but I’m also not sure it needs to be an organized, top-down thing.

Once in a while I will remember some cool item or move from DR that I want to use, but then can’t remember which episode it’s from and lose interest after a moderate amount of digging, so 7 would be useful, I think. The podcast is great for introducing and generating interest, but print is a much more useful reference.

    I don’t see anything wrong with 10.

11 seems like it might help listeners/players relate ideas from the interview to actual play experience, since they would be happening close together (this is already fun to see on +1 Forward).

  5. 1-3 sound amazing to me. Especially 3. I have no idea what that one doesn’t exist! Some structural things you might do with it:

    • Ecology, as you mentioned.

    • How has the monster changed over time (comparative MM editions)? What is interesting about that? For instance, kobolds went from dog-like to draconic.

    • Which look/illustration is the one you (addressed to each host) think of as iconic? This would be a little tough because listeners would have to know it or Google the image. But I would still want to hear it.

    • How would you set up an interesting encounter with one?

Sadly, I don’t think you could play off the monster stat block for structure as you do with the move-based structures of DR and +1 podcasts. You would have to invent catch phrases, like (for the above four ideas):

    Natural Histories

    Metamorphoses

    Notable Sightings

    In the Wild

  7. Oh, and the people involved should do at least one section of that podcast in character as ancient naturalists, like fantasy versions of Pliny the Elder. 🙂

  9. 1 or 2 could be interesting, with whatver system you choose to do.

I would read something like 4 or 11, which I see going in a similar direction. I like 11 better.

8 or 10 could be nice. Always cool to get the community to participate.

  10. Aniket Schneider I wish I could say we pre-planned to have Urban Shadows and The Sprawl episodes of +1 Forward and PSP drop right around the time we were playing them, but it was just a happy coincidence, haha.

  13. Ray Otus Holy shit, that would be a great format for #3. The way I envision it is we would be dead-serious about a topic that is, frankly, not that serious. I think that would be the fun of it.

  15. Ray Otus Jason Cordova yeah that one was my favorite of the list! Monsters were always my favorite part of any rpg. I could spend all day reading through the Monster Manuals. I am actually working on a DW bestiary that draws it’s inspiration from the original 151 pokemon at the moment. I’m converting all the relevant ones to monsters using the rules in the DW book. Oh, and I also liked 4, 7, 8, 9 & 11.

P.S. I would love to be involved in number 3 if it happened, if you couldn’t tell already 😉

  17. 1 and 2 interest me. I have thinking of some day running through actual Basic D&D and a couple old modules. I only started playing RPGs a few years ago. I’m interested in experiencing some of the old school stuff for myself. I own a few that I bought to convert to DW, but playing through them with the old rules might be an interesting exercise. Or disheartening.

7 sounds great! I am about halfway done transcribing items and moves and the like from DR. I need to get back to that project. It shouldn’t take too long. In other words, if you don’t already have all that stuff broken down by episode, I’m happy to send you my notes when I’m finished.

They all sound cool to me, really.

  19. Scott Selvidge Pokemon! My Flavor Picture for a Bakunawa from the first game I ran is a “Realistic” Gyrados, lol. You guys never ran into him. :-p

  21. #1 yeah! Also, converting any published module to DW/WoDu

#7… what about a wiki curating Discern Realities moves and maxims? I know that I’ve paused and rewound many times to catch a certain move or tidbit.

  23. I like all of these ideas but here are the things on that list I’m interested in being involved with:

1 because I’ve been thinking about doing that anyway.

    4 because duh.

7 because all of the reasons already mentioned. Also, Matthew G., a wiki is such a good idea!

8 because I’ve kind of always wanted to be on a podcast.

9 because I’ve always wanted to try my hand at game design and cash prizes are great motivators.

    10 because democracy.

  25. I was going to make a silly comment about wanting them all. And I do. However given you are probably mostly just a human being with time limitations, and everyone has given such great answers thus far, here’s mine. Note that although your APs are great, I honestly don’t listen APs in general that much (the short form ones are a bit of an exception… congratulations on getting me partially hooked!) Same with reading PbP.

So here would be my list of most desired:

    2.Gauntlet ’77 podcast

    3. Monstrous Compendium

    4. Dreams

    7. Codex featuring material originating from Discern Realities

    8. Rotating spot on The Gauntlet

    9. A game design contest

    11. A Designer of the Month feature

  27. 3 definitely, 1 as well, I actually really like hearing about different modules old or new school, I don’t have much experience in classic dungeons/modules. I came into the hobby doing pathfinder APs 🙁 but I would love a classic module conversions/monster/open story ideas(not a page by page conversion) for DW games, kinda like Jasons center pieces.

  29. Oh and as for # 7. Maybe also a B-sides Codex which has some stuff from DR or Contests that didn’t make the final cut, but were close. They could be used as a “free sampling” or “free preview” to get new/keep people interested in the codex. I feel like if The Gauntlet does a wiki, as amazing as it might be, that might just give ALL the goods away for free. You guys give enough free content already.

Sorry if this incites rebellion. If you want to do more free stuff, that’s fine… I’m just saying, I’ve paid money for supplements who havent given me nearly as much as the podcast, which got me into RPG’s in the first place. 😬

  31. 3 needs to be an entirely in-character documentary format, if you do it. (My group recently discussed doing classic D&D dungeons as a wildlife documentary film crew, in fact. Or Simon Schama-style history programme.)

  33. Daniel Lugo Thank God! Bakunawa wiped the floor with my table when I used her. Something about being that big and also having stealthy and devious just caught them off guard.

  35. Dwayne Summerfield I think rather than stat-ing the monster for DW (many of which already are), I’d do custom moves and items inspired by those monsters and their ecology.

  37. Right. I feel like HP and Damage are the least important (certainly the least interesting) things about DW monsters. The MOST interesting are Instincts and Moves.

  39. Ray Otus I’d probably extrapolate out even further than that. Rather than stats or powers for Drow elf encounters, we do a spider-based magic item or a move for some kind of ceremony associated with Lolth.
