I am delighted to announce the first issue of Codex is now available on the website! ‘Blood’ was a test issue, but I’m very happy with how it turned out. I learned a lot about the process of putting something like this together (sourcing content and art, typefaces, working with deadlines, etc.) and I feel confident this is something we can produce on a monthly basis.

Some goals for future issues:

-Increase the number of women creators involved.

-Continue to refine the overall “look” between issues.

-Tie each issue more closely to what is going on with the rest of the Gauntlet (podcasts, Hangouts, and so forth).

I hope you guys enjoy it! Please re-share!

  1. Yay it’s out! Sad to see the Red Blade didn’t make the cut (see what I did there?), but I was happy to see some of my favorite bloods make it into the tables at the end. Especially Magical Liepleurodon!

  3. Kristen D Quirkiness and humor was a focus for that Austin playset. I made a very deliberate decision on the art for that section, as well. The “dark and moody” art more typically associated with Urban Shadows didn’t seem like the right fit.

  5. I’m still mulling over ideas for Chrome, and I can’t wait to take a gander at Blood.

So far, I’m really loving the one-word titles for the editions. It almost feels like their names are “The [Title] Codex” or “The Codex of [Title]”.

  7. There could be a different person named Steve Christensen credited with the poem in the blood tables section. But, just in case it was a clerical error, I should not be credited.

  9. Hey the Medusa’s blood made it. And those lists of bloods pair perfectly with the Perdition RPG that was just released by the combined efforts of Hack & Slash and Goblin Punch.

I have to say that Blackmail in Austin- gothic boutique- is a perfect RPG location.

  11. Eadwin Tomlinson If only that was actually true. I have the text of an “I quit” post going, and I add a new line or two lately every day it seems like 🙁

  15. This is fantastic, as is everything the Gauntlet is doing these days.

I have one thing to say about the layout, and it is definitely a personal preference thing, as I read all my PDFs on a tablet with a smallish screen: I think a single column layout would look so much better. (See every adventure Joe Banner has ever made for what is, in my opinion, the best looking laying out of RPG content ever.)

That said, I feel the need to reiterate that this is fantastic!

(Also, Jason Cordova, you are my primary inspiration in everything roleplaying. The hobby needs you.)

  17. Jacob Densford Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it.

As for Codex – Blood, I haven’t gotten much feedback on it at all yet, so I appreciate yours. I think a combination of releasing on the same day the hobby was eating itself alive, plus GenCon, has made it a pretty low-key thing so far. Also, some people may have simply not read it yet. I expect I’ll start rolling it out to other communities and forums once GenCon is over.
