I have been expressly avoiding the RPG troubles from last week, but I would like to mention the Gauntlet has been bridging the “divide” between story games and the OSR for years.

This week’s episode of The Gauntlet Podcast is pretty snazzy. Richard Rogers and Steve Mains are once again joined by Andrea G from the Ivory Thorns blog.

Tagging-in authors whose work they discuss: Matthew Lowes Matt Machell Steve Kenson Newt Newport

  1. The original version of Icons did have players make all rolls. (They’d roll 2d6, each a different color. One is the effort die, and the other is the difficulty die.) If I’m not mistaken, this is included in the Assembled Edition as an alternate rule.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of Crypts & Things Remastered, especially since the publisher removed the first edition of the game from sale when the Kickstarter for Remastered went up.

If you’re looking to try out an OSR game, I highly recommend Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures. It takes inspiration from B/X, but the flavor is heavily influenced by Earthsea and Prydain (i.e., young adventurers on their first quests). The real killer app, however, is the Fiasco-inspired playbooks and scenario packs made for pick-up-and-play ease!

  3. Matt Martinez My roommate bought Beyond the Wall quite a while ago and keeps promising to run it for us — but, somehow, he never quite gets around to it. Sounds like it’s time to put some pressure on him again! 🙂 Thanks for the info — I definitely want to get it to the table now!

  5. Richard Rogers, please share your thoughts on BMX Mysteries when you get a chance. I’ve been watching Stranger Things, and it’s really fueled my imagination.
