I like it as well, but perhaps rather than the trick of “being in the characters’ posession the whole time” maybe it belonged to another team of adventurers, or a single adventuring wizard, or anyone, really with a long and storied career. That way they can find it rather than pulling it out of their bag like, “Oh, what about this that I’ve had all this time and never used before?” Just my two cents.
