I was curious what other GMs in the community were known for putting into their games frequently.

I was curious what other GMs in the community were known for putting into their games frequently. Basically if someone plays your game, they expect to see these things pop up somewhere every time.

Mine are: Mimics, lycanthropes, airships, redeemable villains, dinosaurs, a wizard inspired by Professor Farnsworth (oh my, yes), portable towers, and undead.

Edit: Oh and at least one very likeable NPC that has a lot of depth and the party keeps around for a while, if not the whole campaign.

Edit #2: And minotaurs… and gnolls lol

  1. A very sarcastic NPC, old ladies, embarrassing confusions over gender & sexuality, a knock on the door at the worst possible moment, an intangible horror, Doctor Who references & quotes and perversions of well-known fairy tales.

  3. I often do a twist on the tropes of a fantasy RPG. Like my adventurers will go into a cave to kill rats on a quest only to be teleported far away as they discover the rats are clockwork creations of a wizard who needed folks to do a quest for him. I like making people roll their eyes till they figure out I’m not actually going to make them do boring level 1 nonsense.

  5. Twins, clones or some kind of identity duality. My natural dislike of wizards. The group pointed out the other week in Dungeon World that I’d made a team of rivals as an ‘anti-party’ as I have done this a bit. This time it wasn’t, but maybe with some cultivation is could be.

I also accept GM advice from two former GMs as ways of making sure I don’t just do what’s recognisable as very ‘me’ plotlines.

  7. NPC Parties, good and bad. Treefolk of all kinds (most of my settings are forest based).

My brother is know for taking Dungeons and Dragons literally. Nearly all his are filled with dragons.

  9. Ferrell Riley

PC: I reach for my sword!

    GM: A scorpion stings you.

PC: Ah! I grab an anti toxin from my bag.

GM: Two scorpions are in there and they sting you.

PC: What?! Screw this, I jump into the nearest river to escape the scorpions.

    GM: The river is scorpions.

  11. GM: Oh, you’re immune to poison? Well scorpions have venom, not poison, so how is this relevant?

PC: Now you’re just splitting hairs!

GM: You realize your hair has been replaced with scorpions.

  13. Back in the misty days of my youth S&M kobolds made regular appearances in games. I also crammed Death Be Not Proud into any game set in the modern world to annoy one particular player. Talking animals and weird little pocket dimensions have had more staying power in my games.
