I wanted to do a little crowd-sourcing on the Miscellany for the test issue of Codex. It will be titled “Three Dozen Bloods and Their Uses.” Submissions need to be a single sentence, pasted here in the comments. By submitting here, you are agreeing to let us use it (you’ll get a credit in the issue). I’m looking for evocative stuff. The purpose of the miscellany is to inspire the reader.

Here are some examples:

“From a black cat, for weaving spells of misfortune.”

“Cockatrice blood, consumed one minute before sunrise, to ease your stiffened joints.”

“A single drop of blood wrung from a stone grants the wisdom of the gods when placed on the tongue.”

Also, here is a bit more of Allan Dotson’s artwork for the test issue, featuring a DW magic item by Timothy Bennett.

  1. “A drop from the head-snake of a medusa, taken at dawn, to solidify love, bravery, a thought, a purpose, or even fear- never to be lost, forgotten, or worn away.”

  3. Blood swearing: To swear a blood bond, the oathtakers cut their hands and then grasp them while swearing their oath to each other. Until the oath is broken or the quest relating to the bond completed, the oath-takers increase their bond count by one (this helps with Aid/Interfere rolls) and are consideted family for the purposes of blood blessings and curses. Breaking the oath grants the person who kept the oath +1 ongoing against the oath breaker…

  5. Bear blood, presented in three shot glasses. The first is scalding hot, another frigid cold, the last just right. Drink all three to gain entry to any home, as long as the owners are away.

  7. Blood from a dryad (sap), apply to the delicate helix of the ear. When the wind chills the blood against your skin you will understand the whisper of the leaves and learn their secrets.

  9. The blood of a Sleeping Giant, consumed when at death’s door, to sleep a chill sleep, maintaining you until healed, but leaving you eternally dreaming, ’til a princess risks her honor to wake you.

  15. Bull’s Blood – Taste a few drops and you will lose all distraction to focus solely on murder and mayhem, only to return to your right mind after awakening stripped-naked in a pool of blood.

  17. Now gram once said that orphan’s blood will make a babe sleep all night,

    that drinking sap from alder trees will ward you agin’ a fright;

And firefly and pixie blood can banish winter’s chill,

But never more than twice a year, or you’ll never get your fill.

  19. Blood of the frost giants runs colder than ice. It is said that only the black heart of death is cold enough to freeze this substance, and only the heat of the sun warm enough to raise its temperature.

  21. A drop of blood from a kobold: surely feel sick; two drops, sick and with little regard for your own safety; three drops and you also can see in the dark for a while.

  23. Thread necromancy! I wanted to let everyone know we are currently raising money on KS to print a big, beautiful hardcover book collecting the first 13 issues of Codex. We’re doing a single print run of this book, and when those are all gone, that’s it! Many of you in this thread have miscellany submissions that made it into one of those early issues, and so you might be interested in getting a copy of the book for yourself. Of particular note is a discounted $35 pledge tier, which is perfect if you don’t care about getting the PDFs.

Even if you’re not interested in getting a copy of the book for yourself, it would be super lovely (and helpful!) if you would share the campaign in your circles.

As it turns out, I can’t actually share a link to the project in this comment because G+ flags such KS links as spam, but if you just go to Kickstarter and search “Codex” it pops right up, or search “Codex RPG” in Google.

    Thanks!
