Fraser Simons is presently Kickstarting a Cyberpunk PbtA game called The Veil. I’m considering backing it for the simple reason I backed Worlds in Peril, which was a really nice book. I know a lot of people around these parts are really into The Sprawl right now, but I think this is worth a look.

Thoughts?

  1. While I liked the look of World in Peril, and own the book, there was some rules issues that creeped into our play of it that didn’t quite groove with what I thought the game was trying to accomplish. That said this isn’t the same exact design team, the book was gorgeous, and AR cyberpunk is a pretty boss focus to me.

  3. I’m having the same debate. I dig The Sprawl, but it takes a strongly focused approached to missions and adventure design. WiP aimed for a more open take on supers, so I’m thinking this might also, or at least (as Chris suggests) hit some new territory.

  5. The beta downloads are available, so maybe later in the summer after the Sprawl games are done, perhaps we get a Veil session or few on the calendar using the beta materials?

  7. Thank you to anyone who backed this, I really appreciate it and so does Kyle Simons ! I tweaked a lot of stuff in AW to hopefully give everyone the tools to tell some pretty compelling stories and I really like the results from states instead of stats so far.

I really love augmented and mixed reality tech that’s already coming down the pipe. I think it’s super interesting how cyberpunk media will change with that tech being integrated into our reality fairly soon – it’s not even far off now!

We’re doing copy editing on the draft and we have a couple playbooks in testing. If anyone were to play I could definitely provide all the playbooks – even the super secret unannounced one.

  9. Great timing. I was looking for a PbtA Cyberpunk game and considering making one if there wasn’t one already.

Edit: I just read the playbook descriptions for The Veil, and it took an act of will not to back the project right then and there. The playbook names are all so evocative. They’re right up there with the original AW playbook names.

  11. River Williamson Actually, the last thing I backed was The Name of God a couple of months ago. I have slowed down my KS backing significantly this year.

  13. I ended up using a bit of Worlds in Peril in my current playtest build of Just a Game and like to support when I can because my own kickstarter a tend to produce very little funding but currently I’m looking at next month being very funds poor. So by the time I have money I can pretend to afford it’ll be July.

  15. I decided to back it. Your emotional state being used to inform your stats is super-interesting, and seems genre-appropriate. It’s also something I’ve never seen in PbtA (Masks has something similar, but not quite the same). Also, it’s just really pretty.

  17. Jason Cordova Thanks Jason, I wasn’t aware of Masks doing something similar, will check it out. So far the closest people have said came close was Headspace. The artist is amaaaaazing. Can’t wait to have 5 pieces of art in there by him!!

  19. Fraser Simons Mask’s stats are influenced by what other people think of you, which, like I said, not the same thing, but similar in the sense it’s not just about your physical abilities.

  21. Jason Cordova That sounds pretty neat, too! I hope you like states as much as those kinds of stats. I’m obviously a huge fan of it and what it does for the fiction, but I’m also the most biased.

  23. Hamish Cameron Thanks Hamish! You and Mark Richardson have been super great. It’s super cool that you guys both have been so supportive of different cyberpunk in a similar space as your own games!

  25. Hamish Cameron I’m in the great white north, Canada! my work schedule is crazy in the summer but after summer is over my schedule opens up a lot and I can see about hitting some conventions!!

  27. Basically +1 to everything, the genre can take all sorts of new approaches and ideas. And I like that all of our designs deviate a fair bit not only from each others but also from AW. I would probably say I lean the most away from AW but I’ve not yet had time to go through Sprawl/Veil much as I’ve been focused on Headspace so damn much.

  29. Mark Richardson Yeah makes sense! I think we are all different and all Cyberpunk and it’s awesome. Lovin’ it all!

Also guys Hamish Cameron the gauntlet has a custom move competition going on right now, I already submitted mine 😉 I posted it and it’s on their newest Discern Realities ep. Gotta post it there. I think it’d be fun for you guys to try a custom move out toooo, if you feel like it =)
