My soon 10yo player keeps introducing legends and prophecies to our simplified PbtA games and I came up with this just now. Do you have any suggestions or know any similar moves from existing games?

When you remember a prophecy, tell it and roll.

On 10+ choose 1, on 7-9 choose 2.

– One of the details is untrue or incomplete.

– The MC can add an extra detail to the prophecy.

– Something is preventing the fulfillment of the prophecy.

Take +1 to all actions that will fulfill the prophecy.

Take -1 to all actions that will disprove the prophecy.

He likes using legends to establish the existence of magical items and a prophecy to say that he was the hero destined to use them or that it was the item destined to solve a problem. It might be better to ignore the prophecies and focus on ways to let him introduce elements to the setting since I think that’s his main motive. I like the concept though and I would like to try it on him anyway.

  1. First of all, you have got to be the coolest dad ever!

I really like your custom move. I would ditch the -1 to actions that disprove the prophecy, but otherwise it seems really solid and fun. I’m a huge fan of moves that flesh out the world fiction.

  3. Thanks Jason Cordova! Fulfilling my dream.

I wanted a way to use the prophecy against him if the situation changed and the fulfillment of the prophecy is no longer desirable. Do you think the -1 is just unnecessary or do you think it detracts from the move?

  5. I think to the extent you want to introduce an element of risk to the move, the hold options should be sufficient (especially since they are already sort of ‘negative’). That said, with a younger player it might be advantageous to have a simple +/- modifier to encourage certain outcomes. I’m torn, haha.

  7. I did something similar with the Seer’s move in Epyllion to share the narrative control with an 8 year old player. I’ll post it here when I’m back at my computer.
