A brief discussion about something I have heard Jason Cordova talk about with regards to why people play terrible games. This way one can send a simple link to explain one’s position instead of lowering oneself to talk to the unwashed masses.

  1. Haven’t listened yet, but I gather it’s about sunk costs. I think that still mostly holds (particularly for board games), but I’ve refined my thinking a bit in relation to RPGs. I now think that, a lot of times, people play bad RPGs because that’s what the one guy in their town happened to be running, and so now that’s what they’re used to. It’s this idea that RPGs are, ultimately, a very local experience (something I stole from Richard Rogers and Canon Puncture Show).

Hell, I’m happy if people are playing RPGs at all, shitty or otherwise. The hobby needs more actual play. Except Pathfinder, of course. Fuck that game.
