A little part of me dies (violently) every time someone suggests a new game of Pathfinder on our Meetup.

  1. If Rob Ferguson hadn’t died in that horrible VR tragedy, he would be encouraging my worst self right now.

“Give those motherfuckers the boot!” he used to scream, red-faced.

    I miss that sweet kid.

  3. i think most of us who run games could run an excellent Pathfinder system game.  The issue is, that there are so many better systems to tell the same kind of swords & sorcery style game, that don’t require the hours of homework.

  5. Well, homeboy took that Pathfinder game down. I wonder if he’s taking his toys and going home because of my post? Gosh, I hope not. I’ve said way worse things than that!

  7. Jason Cordova As a newer member I think its more the notion of inclusion that it [this post] gives off, not what it’s necessarily saying. It could easily been read a malicious instead of as a personal comment. I appreciate what the gauntlet does and tries to do but in this case it feels more like isolating those “Trad” gamers and making them feel less included. Hope it makes sense but just my 2 cents

  9. as a trad gamer i see your point but i also see that the community here isn’t really leaning that direction. till the gauntlet and online gaming my non-trad gaming fix was non-existant with all my players outright refusing/ignoring my suggestions. that’s tough when you’re the GM. pathfinder players have a farther reaching pool of people to play with., i’d ask the Gauntlet as a last resort tbh.

  11. The Gauntlet is a very friendly and open minded group, but we also have strong opinions and believe in being very critical when discussing games.  That’s not to say that we all agree or that you are required to agree with Jason.

That being said, knowing the others as I do, I chose to read the comments here as friendly banter.  My own comments were meant to be read in the same tone but text messages can leave out a lot of subtext.

I’m sure that we could have fun playing pathfinder and I’m sure that there are at least some pathfinder players that could be redeemable human beings given the chance.

  13. Kyle Kowalski I take your point, but there are also, like, a hundred different Meetups where people organize Pathfinder games. Pathfinder players don’t need The Gauntlet. And Pathfinder players certainly don’t need me to validate their fun.

But people who skip-out on Gauntlet-proper (meaning events organized by Dan and myself) are really missing out. This is an incredible community of gamers. It’s true we’re not as big as some other gaming communities in Houston, and we’re definitely a little insular, but once you’re a member of the club and you start to ‘get it,’ there’s nothing else like it. I’ve had some people tell me they would have left Houston a long time ago if not for us.

Is it a little cult-like? Maybe. But if so, it’s a very fun cult.

  15. Daniel Fowler I entirely read these comments like that because that’s how the Gauntlet was presented to me Eddy Gonzalez The issue is with someone who may have just moved into town and not knowing people, the Gauntlet definitely is the easiest way (I found) to find role-players so new people in town see a large role-playing group and go with that.

I’m not here to defend said person or spark an argument I just wanted to point out how the text and discussion “could” sound to people less familiar. I think it’s a great community and only accomplished by the individuals in it and can only grow through inclusion so I just wanted to point that out.
