We need the community’s help!

We need the community’s help! A new episode of the podcast is landing tomorrow and we can’t decide on a title. The episode’s main topic is the OSR. Here are some possible titles we have come up with:

“Kickin’ it Old School”

“OSR You Ready for This?”

“OSR – P – E – C – T”

Vote on those, or nominate your own awesome titles. We have until later this evening to figure this out!

  1. Wow, there is some OSR-hate on the thread. So, the thing is, even though I don’t play OSR games myself, I have a lot of affection for the spirit behind the OSR movement. And the discussion we have in the podcast is very good and very insightful. I think people will have a changed view of the OSR after listening to it.

  3. I don’t hate OSR but there was a time early in the gauntlets history where we played several one shots and afterwards I asked questions about what had happened and the answer was “that’s OSR”.  not bothering to look it up I came to assume that OSR stood for something like “Punish the players for not making the right choice”.  I was later corrected.   I do think that in a less fun group of people I could have easily come to the conclusion that all RPGs where terrible and only for Grog-nerds and stoped showing up.  its only because I had so much fun laughing and complaining about the terrible games with you guys that I am still here today.

  5. I think it’s an in-joke. OSR is the root for a lot of us, but there are a lot of things looking back that I go “why the hell did I waste so much time on this bullshit?”

I can appreciate that games are being made that have a high level of mechanical crunch, and appeal to an audience. But to paraphrase our Glorious Leader, “I’m a grown ass man and I have shit to take care of.”

  7. Well, the conversation on this thread is why I think this episode will be revealing. There is a lot of misunderstanding about the OSR, especially from people on our side of the gaming ledger.

  9. I like OSR You Ready For This.

I’m really looking forward to this episode. My opinion of OSR has shifted recently after listening to Adam Koebel (Dungeon World) run a remarkable Stars Without Numbers campaign. System might be far less important than I previously thought.

  11. Guy Pierce I don’t know if I’m willing to go that far. I happen to think system matters a whole lot.

But it’s tricky, you know? Because the thing is, I think I’m a pretty good GM. I can run anything successfully (except, possibly, FATE). And so, in that regard, system may not matter much.

But I think the great failure of roleplaying games is the fact most depend so heavily on a skilled GM. It is the one aspect of the hobby that will guarantee it remains a niche one. But in a game with rock-solid, dependable rules (like the best story games have), you should be able to reach a good outcome regardless of the individual skill of the participants. And that, I think, is the future.

  13. Regarding “OSR – P – E – C – T”:  Um.  Your joke appears to be broken.  Or I’m missing something.

If this were another podcast, I’d suggest they go with Kickin’ It Old School.  But since it’s The Gauntlet, OSR-E-S-P-E-C-T or OSRmageddon are the best.

That said, looking forward to this one.  There’s clearly something I don’t get* about the OSR movement, and I’m curious.

*I’d wager it’s about 65% nostalgia, but there’s something else there too.

  15. I was just saying it doesn’t sound like R-E-S-P-E-C-T.  It’s like that Jank Cast thing Todd keeps mentioning, Jank Online Demand.  It’s supposed to sound like Jank Online and also like Jank On Demand, but it ends up sounding like neither.

However, now that I see Russ’s suggestion, that gets my vote.
