A new episode of the podcast landed this morning.

A new episode of the podcast landed this morning. It is a bonus episode we prepared in anticipation of a gap in our recording schedule because Dan is in Las Vegas (I don’t know what he’s up to over there, but I bet it involves long rubber gloves and lots of baby oil; #HailSatan).

For this one, a number of us came on to discuss roleplaying games that fundamentally changed our view of what a roleplaying game can be.

  1. And as promised, this was the topic I suggested over on rpg.net.  Enjoyed the show.  Now to check out Final Girl and Archipelago!

If anyone interested the game that made me see RPGs differently (although a bit of a cliché), was Call of Cthulhu back when I was in my mid teens.  Before that RPGs were about creating a kick-ass character, stabbing monsters in the face, taking their loot and then using said loot to buy bigger, better weapons to stab bigger, nastier monsters in the face with.

CoC  taught me it wasn’t about how awesome your character was but how awesome the story can be.    Now, I think Gumshoe handles that type of game much better, but still have very fond memories of CoC.

  3. I think I’d like to tag-in the other designers whose games we discussed: Adam Koebel Sage LaTorra Matthijs Holter Robert Bohl Malcolm Craig

Probably Paul Czege should be in here, too (MLwM came up briefly).

And I don’t know who to tag for the FATE discussion. Evil Hat Productions ?

  5. Robert Bohl Actually, as I recall, Misspent Youth came-up in Episode 8, too. We were talking about it in the context of games that have pre-determined narrative outcomes.

  7. Great episode. I really enjoy when you get in depth on certain games. I’d love to hear episodes focusing on single games down the line.

  9. At that time, I admit that Dungeon World left me cold after reading Apocalypse World

Like it lost something in the process as a PBTA game.

But ,considered as an emulation of dungeon crawling as it should be, it’s easy to get caught up by your infectious passion ^^

  11. Volsung J.O. There is a fan-made supplement for Dungeon World (I think it’s called The Beginner’s Guide to DW, or something like that), and I think Sage & Adam need to include it in a future edition of the game. That supplement really hammers home how the game is supposed to be played and enjoyed.

One of the things I love about the PbtA games is that the good ones have their own distinct feel and goals. Monsterhearts is really quite different from AW, which is quite different from DW. Each has moves written to tell a certain type of story. That’s why it bugs me when I see people who have only had exposure to DW trying to re-skin it for some other setting. I think, “No, that’s incorrect. Dungeon World’s moves are laser-focused on the pleasures of a dungeon crawl. What you really want to do is make your own hack of Apocalypse World.”

  13. This is probably mean of me to say, then, but I’ve played TFG with Bret himself, at least once, and the game kicks fucking ass. I’m mad I didn’t get it sooner because there are people I know who would love it.

  15. count me in as another would be buyer of the final girl

I had hoped to use it to show my fiancé (a horror movie enthusiast) and some of her friends the story side of RPGs at our next board game night as their only exposure thus far has been mechanics/tactics driven d&d

as far as games that have changed how I look at RPGs I’d go with Psi*Run-starting with d&d myself a few years ago, and being primarily the gm, I soon tired of the tedium

I learned through Psi*Run that it’s possible, and often more fun, to go into a session with no preparation, or little in the case of most other games, and how valuable player input is to an interesting and surprising story

honorable mentions are fate and apocalypse world for reasons already mentioned

really enjoying the show-thanks for your effort

  17. I have technically purchased The Final Girl three times: once as a PDF, once as a softcover, and once in a  Bundle of Holding. Since I never received the softcover, does that mean I am somewhat in the clear on sharing the PDF at least twice? As a general matter, I don’t believe in sharing copyrighted work. Apart from being a lawyer (although not an IP lawyer), I also have lots of friends who are creative-types and I think they should get paid for their work. Still, I feel like, cosmically-speaking, I should get a pass. Thoughts?
