  1. I’m not sure what the revisions are, but I hope they fixed the investigation move, which, while not horrible, is a bit of a flaw in an otherwise great system.

  3. “New material including an introductory mystery; example monsters like Balkan vampires, ghouls, and spore trolls; and hunter types like the Crooked and the Spell-Slinger.”

  5. actually the more I look at it the more that lady’s sword arm causes me to wince in pain.  also did the guy in the tentacle really drop a judge dread gun, an expanding night stick, a hand grenade, a (pair of?) nunchaku?  it also looks like he may have lost a scimitar in the background.

  7. From my sources it sounds like they polished it a bit, but the core mechanics still are janky and in need of fixing. Investigate is still that list of questions apparently.

  9. Ferrell Riley I’d be curious to know who identified the core mechanics as janky, because that would be like saying Apocalypse World has janky mechanics. The only problematic one (and it’s pretty minor, to my mind) is the investigate move.

  11. I guess what I mean is that I’m curious if the people leveling the criticism are coming from a more trad perspective, or do they have experience with Apocalypse World. Because, if you don’t have a lot of experience with AW, MotW will definitely seem inadequate to the task.

  13. Russell Benner We’ve talked about that issue on the podcast. I think what it boils down to, increasingly, is that it comes across as a little artificial.

As for the MotW change, I wholeheartedly approve. It’s a system that makes a lot of sense in a game where it’s all about action and adventure, and not so much about interpersonal conflicts.

  15. So I have seen the traditional AW XP method encourage certain behaviors, but maybe it’s something that comes out more across a longer campaign.

I’m fine with replacing it, though, as it’s not ideal.  I just wish they were replacing it with anything but DW’s system, which–and again, we’ve talked about this on the podcast–I hate.  It afford players no control over their leveling, (which makes it inferior to AW’s system in that respect), allows no player-to-player feedback loop (so, same: inferior), and provides no pacing except at random and different for everyone (so it loses out to “You all gain an advance now!  Hooray!”)  All it has going for it is a bit of what Call of Cthulhu and Burning Wheel do–tending to advance what you use, except DW’s not even really doing that.  It allows you to advance whichever thing you like in return for using (and failing at) anything at all.  So it doesn’t even make as much sense as CoC/BW, where you advance the specific things you use.

    Bah!  Humbug.

  17. I’m increasingly on board with the idea that the AW highlighting stats XP method is a bad way to go.  I just have yet to see a good one.  I wonder if I can find anything interesting in any of the free hacks that are out there.

  19. ‘S on my list of possible podcast topics (and I certainly have more to say about XP in general), but I figured I’d probably wait until there was a bit more space between XP talks to propose it.

  21. I just combed through all the PBtA hacks I have to take a look at their XP/advancement mechanics.  There are some really interesting ways various games go about it.  I’m off to work, but I’ll put up a post some time soon about it.
