Presently trying to find a Call of Cthulhu scenario for tomorrow’s game of Cthulhu Dark. It makes me want to blow my brains out, because there is way too much stuff to choose from. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good CoC scenario that hews to the basic, 1920’s setting?

  1. Yeah, in the ToC game, St. Margaret’s seemed like what we were investigating and what was going on were… two fairly separate things, I guess?  It was weird.

Graham Walmsley specifically mentions TDoSM as one of the scenarios that went off without a hitch when he was first playtesting CD, though.

I’ll say more when I have a bit more than two minutes’ free time.

  3. There is one scenario that I found quite nice, and more appropriate for a story game-style approach. I want to say it was called “Black Man with a Horn” but I’ll need to research it to find out for sure.

  5. It’s called “The Dead-Man Stomp” and it’s in the following books: 1920s Keeper’s Kit, CoC: 5th Edition, CoC: 5.5 Edition, CoC: 5.6 Edition, CoC: 6th Edition.

  7. After looking through a wiki of published scenarios (http://www.yog-sothoth.com/wiki/index.php/CoC:Scenarios), I am also reminded of the following, some of which I recall as being very good:

“The Auction” by Randy McCall in The Asylum and Other Tales, The Cthulhu Casebook

“The Curse of Chaugnar Faugn” by William A. Barton in Curse of the Chthonians, The Cthulhu Casebook

“Thoth’s Dagger” by William Hamblin in Curse of the Chthonians, The Cthulhu Casebook

In fact, for early scenarios, most of the Cthulhu Casebook is quite good.

  9. Steve Mains I’m using Dark Depths to create my own scenario for today’s session. It’s going pretty well so far! These instructions aren’t perfect, but they’re enough.

  11. Jason Cordova  That’s really cool; Dark Depths looked promising.  Almost went that route, but then remembered an old convention scenario I read years ago that I always wanted an excuse to run.

  13. Steve Mains Yeah, I just hate running modules, which is why I was getting frustrated with the process yesterday. They are someone else’s story, which is something of a mental hurdle for me. I don’t mind cherry-picking cool things here and there, but ultimately, I have to run something of my own creation and with which I am very familiar. That’s the only way I can do the session in a more improvisational style, taking cues from what the players seem interested in doing.
