I’m readIng the rules for Durance in anticipation of our upcoming Sunday game, and I have to say, I am pretty damn impressed so far. First of all, the book is just beautiful. Second, the setting is deeply fascinating. I wish I was half as smart as Jason Morningstar. Gameplay-wise, from what I can tell, it’s a sort of riff on Fiasco, which can only be good. Looking forward to it!

  1. I listened to a podcast he did talking about writing that, and it sounded pretty interesting.  Does the book make clear that he based the setting on Australia’s early colonization? He talked about that a lot in the podcast and it was really interesting.

  3. Well, I guess it’s evident from reading the book if you know something about that period of Australia’s history.

This is a very Jason Morningstar thing to do. He is big into history and cultures, and his games always have some underlying meaning. Some people view it as a bit pretentious, but I think it deepens the experience (at best) or is just an interesting thing that neither adds to nor subtracts from the fun (at worst).

  5. On a side note, Daniel Lewis, one of the casts I listen to jokingly pronounces Durance as if it were Italian (as in doo-RAHN-chay). I may have to refer to it like that, too.
