Mark Chance Jason Cordova Grant Davis would you guys be interested in doing an every Friday or every other Friday game where we alternate game systems and GMs between sessions?  I don’t know about you guys but I love trying new systems and would love to have a regular venue to do so in.  So we’d each basically be taking turns running one-shots of whatever system has taken our fancy.

  1. I am totally cool with Fridays, but I prefer multiple sessions of one game.  Not necessarily campaign length or anything, but some games don’t really get a chance to breathe until a couple sessions in.

  3. Jason Cordova That’s a good point.  There are some games that I’d like to try that wouldn’t work as one-shots; you’d end up spending more time building characters than playing them.  I’d be up for playing multiple sessions of some games as long as none of them end up morphing into an epic, never-ending campaign.

  5. Another option is the DM could bring pre built characters so players could jump directly into the game. That’s what I’ve seen done for one shots before.

  7. I’m very interested in playing Dungeon World, and the character creation is dead-quick and simple. The first session there is no prep at all, you just dive in and get a feel for the system and kind of suss-out what the group wants to do. But it’s a level based system (like DnD, but only goes to 10), and I definitely think you’d be missing something if you didn’t play a few sessions. Anyway, those are my thoughts. I’m certainly happy to GM.

  9. I’ll toss my hat into the ring for consideration if that’s cool. I play Atomic Highway and Homicidal Transients, both of which are available free and are dead easy to one shot.

  11. Okay, it looks to me like Emily G., Daniel Lewis, Grant Davis, Scott Croom and myself like the ideal of one-shots, whereas Jason Cordova and Daniel Lewis like the ideal of multiple session games.  Like Daniel I see the appeal of both and I think we might be able to accommodate both desires.  What I’ve got is a nice big conference room with a marble slab tabletop that’s designed to seat 6 comfortably (but could easily handle 8). It’s located at Mid Lane and Westheimer near the Galleria.  Ideally I’d like to start gaming no later than 7pm and not have the session last longer than 4 to 5 hours.

  13. We can use this communities Event feature to schedule the games, I’m proposing we start the first game off as a one-shot of some kind on February 1st (2 Fridays from now) – unless someone wants to try an run something tomorrow?

  15. Can’t make it on the first.  After that my Fridays should be good, though, so I’ll have to catch you guys at the second session, whenever that ends up being.

  17. I’ve played Dungeon Squad. I used it to expose some little nieces and nephews to gaming. The game is VERY simple. It’s fun, but quite shallow (on purpose). For simple fantasy systems that are a bit more rewarding, I like On Mighty Thews and In a Wicked Age. Both are more Conan than dungeon crawl in scope, but they’re pretty terrific for how simple they are. On Mighty Thews is actually a hack of Dungeon Squad.

  19. It seems like there’s a lot of hacks for Dungeon Squad.  Other games I wouldn’t mind running are Weird West, Edge of Space, Dungeon Raiders, Lost Empires (or Savage Worlds – I’m always willing to run a SW game).

  21. Not really thinking of anything specific, Kenny. I’m currently working the most on stuff for Swords & Wizardry and Stars Without Number.

My son Christopher and I might be available this Friday. I’ll have to double-check with the wife to make sure there’s nothing scheduled.

Update: It looks the boy and I are free this Friday evening. The one possible hitch is that it’s the first Friday, so the church youth group might be meeting. No word yet. Archbishop Muller is visiting from Rome this weekend, so normal activities might be postponed.

  23. Jason Cordova It was fun (I will admit I do have a fondness of die-step type systems), but a bit too light for my tastes – I’m going to read though the half-dozen plus variants of it to see what I think of those. The players indicated they enjoyed it.

  25. I could be ready to run any of the following by next Friday:  PSI*Run, In a Wicked Age, Dread (but only if the room has a dimmer switch, ha!) or Dogs in the Vineyard (though it’s best over several sessions).

  27. Mark Chance that’s cool, I’m not expecting anyone to make it every Friday (except myself) – that’s one of the reasons for doing one-shots instead of an ongoing campaign

  29. Kerry Harrison Actually, I think I’d like to do Dogs in the Vineyard.  The setting is a lot of fun and it has a neat conflict resolution system based on poker-style raises and sees.  I’ve played around nine sessions of it, and it’s always a blast.
