I’ve been drawing a complete blank trying to remember the name of a game: Victorian horror, and the game opens with a seance-style cleansing of the room.

Has anyone had a chance to try Paul Taliesin’s Thus Began the Adventures of Eowyn?  It focuses on Eowyn as a survivor who is both strengthened and haunted by her experiences during the War of the Ring, and the ways in which this shapes her response to a new evil.  Mechanically, it uses Lady Blackbird-style keys that allow the character to change and grow when she faces situations in which she has to abandon or question her motives and assumptions.   The game came to mind when I was listening to the discussion of Lowell’s home brew Tolkien campaign in Episode 59. . . .

Out of morbid curiosity, are any of you folks near Carbondale, Illinois? My partner and I were talking about putting together a game of James V West ‘s The Pool. . . .

I’ve been puttering with this idea recently, and last night it seemed to take on some semi-workable form.  It was inspired by a childhood friend’s account of running into a mascot in the restroom of a park, and a grad school friend’s stories about his experiences as Shoney Bear–stories that ended with the bone-chilling phrase “we had to burn the head.”

For some reason the notion of using random text to create characters has popped into my head.  More tactile folks could cut bits of text from magazines and catalogs, mix them together, then draw three or four to use as traits; you could also use the Video Game Name Generator and random searches in Wikipedia to find text.

This would work best (using “work” in the most generous sense) with Risus, PDQ, or Fate Accelerated characters.  A little puttering yielded a couple of examples:

Mister Stubbs

no one can stop the puppy lord

   couch potato

   Oceanville, New Jesey

Princess Gamma

   salsa dancing

   nihilistic hamster detective

   Imprisoned with the Pharaohs

Milton

   unremarkable croquet boy

church security has become a major concern

   Equinox (Styx album)
