In Episode 101 of The Gauntlet Podcast, I sit down with Todd Crapper to discuss his game High Plains Samurai! Todd is doing some really interesting things with this game vis-a-vis narrative structure, and we unpack a lot of that in this interview. I think after listening to it, you’re going to want to give the Kickstarter a look. It can be found here:

New Patreon Goal – OSR Podcast Project

New Patreon Goal – OSR Podcast Project

New Patreon Goal – OSR Podcast Project

Hi everyone! We hit our most recent Patreon goal and so we’ve started the planning for GauntletCon, an online gaming convention. We’re going to have more to announce on that very soon. In the meantime, I wanted to let you know about our next Patreon goal…

Tom McGrenery and I have started the pre-production phase of a brand-new discussion podcast focused on classic and OSR modules and setting books. Once we hit $1400, we’ll be able to cover regular production costs and will release the first episode immediately.

This project is going to be really fun; it’s something I have wanted to work on for a long time, and Tom and I have a really great rapport (you can hear us playing Monster of the Week in our Comic Strip AP feed). It’s still early days, but here are some notes about where we’re going with the project:

-Each episode will focus on a single module or setting book (we already know which module the first episode is about, but we’re keeping that a secret for now).

-Our overall approach is to be very comprehensive, almost holistic, in how we discuss the topic for each episode. The goal, as in all things “Gauntlet,” is to help you get these modules and setting books to the table, and so we hope to not only do what is essentially a review of the book in question, but also discuss different techniques and approaches for making sure you are getting the most out of it in play.

Segment Breakdown (tentative)

-Each episode will likely start with an overview of the module or setting book. We’ll discuss what we liked, what we didn’t like, the book’s major themes, etc..

-The next segment will be a discussion about how to re-contextualize or adapt the module for a specific playstyle or specific set of circumstances (for example: “How to run Death Frost Doom as a one-shot” or “How to turn Scenic Dunnsmouth into a series of Fronts for Dungeon World” or “How to update Keep on the Borderlands so it feels fresh and exciting”).

-The final segment will be about films, books, and other media references we believe best represent the themes and tone of the module. The idea here is you have some resources you can check out if you want to capture how the module should feel at the table, as well as having a handy list you can point your players to.

I think this is going to be a really fun project. Just like Discern Realities and Dungeon World, your level of interest in the OSR isn’t going to determine how much you like this show. It’s going to be a show about technique presented through a very particular lens. I promise you will love it.

Thanks to everyone who is helping us hit these Patreon goals. We are excited to bring you more Gauntlet awesomeness!

Codex Spotlight – Five Blood-Soaked Magic Items for Dungeon World

Codex Spotlight – Five Blood-Soaked Magic Items for Dungeon World

Codex Spotlight – Five Blood-Soaked Magic Items for Dungeon World

Codex – Blood was our test issue of the zine. Our ultimate goal was extremely ambitious: publish a new issue of the zine every month, on the first of every month, like clockwork. When you consider our core team had exactly zero publishing experience, you begin to realize the goal was not only ambitious, but audacious (and maybe a little stupid, haha). Before we could get close to that goal, we needed a test; we couldn’t do this project if we didn’t have some easily-repeatable structures for the features, and Codex – Blood was vital to developing those structures.

Each issue of Codex has some combination of 1) features by a single author, 2) features by a small, hand-selected group of authors, and 3) features that are entirely crowd-sourced. That blend enables us to source great material for the zine in an efficient, flexible manner. Five Blood-Soaked Magic Items for Dungeon World is an example of the second form.

The Gauntlet was built on Dungeon World. Dungeon World is in our DNA. Our early days in Houston were driven almost entirely by the fact people were joining to try out DW with us. Later, David and I started a popular DW podcast, and Gauntlet Hangouts continues to have a strong DW presence. It makes sense that Codex also features a lot of DW material. Five Blood-Soaked Magic Items is short but very, very sweet. Each item is entirely on-point in terms of both mechanical soundness and theme, and the feature has some great artwork by Allan Dotson (like the Bag of Blood-Speckled Shroomlings below). Some of the items, like the Codex of Atrocities and the Carnelian Chalice, have been the basis of whole adventures I have run in the past. It’s a rich collection of DW goodies, and as an early example of what was possible in Codex, I couldn’t be more proud of it.

There are only 7 days left to get all the Codex back issues!

Fraser Simons and Kyle Simons are busting through stretch goals on The Veil: Cascade! They’ve unlocked more art, expanded word count, and a setting by Kira Magrann. Up next are settings by Dana Cameron, Quinn Murphy, and our own Kate Bullock!

(Also: Oli Jeffery is doing layout and David LaFreniere is helping out with copy editing. I know those guys!)

If you need to know more, I spoke with Fraser about Cascade back on Episode 92 of The Gauntlet Podcast

If you’re curious about The Veil, Lowell Francis recently ran two sessions for Gauntlet Hangouts. Those videos can be found here:

I’m pleased to announce Andrew Shields will be running a one-shot of Maze Rats in the Yoon-Suin setting on Gauntlet Hangouts.

Andrew is a writer who has contributed to games like Blades in the Dark, as well as to our zine, Codex (his article, City of Carcosa, can be found in Codex – Yellow). Depending on how this session goes, Andrew may run a regular game for Gauntlet Hangouts.

Gauntlet Hangouts Patrons can RSVP right now. General access opens on May 30th.

Codex Spotlight – Wind on the Path

Codex Spotlight – Wind on the Path

Codex Spotlight – Wind on the Path

Wind on the Path was originally featured in Codex – Iron. It’s a game written by Jonathan Lavallee, with an illustration by Randy M and layout/character sheets by Oli Jeffery. It’s a samurai dueling game designed to be played at large gatherings and I talked about it at length in Episode 95 of The Gauntlet Podcast, which you can listen to here around 40 seconds in:

http://www.gauntlet-rpg.com/the-gauntlet-podcast/episode-95-impulse-drive-wind-on-the-path-7th-sea

What I want to mention in this post is that Dylan Ross has created a really terrific set of tools for playing the game online, and we have begun to use those tools to organize samurai duels in our Slack channel. If you want to see what those online tools look like, they can be found here:

Will P and I recently had a duel over Hangouts. It was loads of fun. The video is embedded below in case you want to see how the game works (note: I mischaracterized one of the rules in the video; in fact, information revealed in previous duels remains revealed. The number of Witnesses only affects the information revealed in the current duel).

You have until May 31st to get Codex – Iron. Just make a $4 pledge on Patreon.
