Here is a link to Cthulhu Dark: The HIstory of Mercy Falls 02! Like all the sessions in this series, it is a standalone mystery.
The backdrop for this one is Mercy Falls in 1943. Most of the town’s young people are gone because of, or otherwise preoccupied with, the war effort. However, a young Marine injured in the war has returned to town early. The investigators are all women seniors, members of the Mercy Falls League of Women. They initially reach out to the young Marine to make sure he is comfortable, but eventually get dragged deep into a mystery surrounding him.
This one is unusual in that its central mystery focuses on an individual, rather than the normal “strange things happening all over town” Mythos story. It is still Lovecraftian, and has a Mythos monster at its core, but it’s strikingly different in pace and tone (probably a little closer to Twin Peaks in that regard, which is no surprise because this is part of Mercy Falls). We also explored a theme that is little-explored in media, which is the sexuality of older people. and what happens to these lonely, somewhat bored old women when a handsome, vulnerable young man arrives in town. It was pretty great.
Thanks to the players who helped tell this terrific tale: Kevin Lovecraft Lauren McManamon David LaFreniere and Tom McGrenery

We’d like to do some crowdsourcing for the Miscellany in Codex – Joy.
We’d like to do some crowdsourcing for the Miscellany in Codex – Joy. The Miscellany is called “Three dozen attractions at the Carnival of Dreams.” Submissions need to be a single sentence, or 2-3 very short sentences. By submitting here, you’re agreeing to let us use it (you’ll get a credit on the issue). We’re looking for evocative stuff. The purpose of the Miscellany is to inspire the reader.
Importantly, we’re looking for specific things you might see at the Carnival of Dreams. So, for example, “freak show” would be too general, but a specific performer in the freak show would be excellent. These entries can have a dreamy, fantastic, or even scary quality to them.
A note for international Gauntleteers: we’re using “carnival” in the American sense, which is similar to a traveling circus.
Here are some examples:
“Kar-Suet the Serpent King, Master of Vipers, Lord of All Snakes! Born under the baleful eye of the Egyptian god Set, cursed to crawl on his belly for a millennia, he is now arisen to take his place as the Prince of Pythons, the Emperor of Cobra-kind!”
“The Johnny Reb animatronic machine. Put in your nickel and Johnny will sing you a traditional song of the South and whisper something about the secret history of the Civil War in your ear.”
“Ursula Ondine, the Teutonic Temptress, Siren of the North Sea. Twice a night she sings songs of heartbreak and desire on a stage decorated in nautical and Germanic motifs. She is also a very good card player, and can often be found organizing a game in front of her trailer.”

This was an extremely fun session, though content warnings for suicide and weird sex shit are probably in order.

Heroes and Crystal Kingdoms
HaCK was written by Maria Rivera. It’s a JRPG video game re-skin for Slade Stolar’s The Indie Hack. It includes new rules, tags and equipment, as well as Archetypes and Jobs. What I love about this piece is the Archetypes and Jobs are very comprehensive in terms of the genre Maria is trying to emulate. The whole package is just really thoughtfully put together. It includes charming artwork by Alex Prinz and a cool, SNES-style layout by Oli Jeffery.
Trepallidic Parasites
This is a collection of Dungeon World elements written by Matt Stuart It’s about crystalline spores that take root in sentient hosts and create a wicked hivemind network from them. It includes a Danger focused on the hivemind, monsters, a custom move, and the (ghoulish, delightful) Parasite Host compendium class! It features a stunning piece of art by Vandel J. Arden.
Keepers of Antarra
This is an original story game by Steffie de Vaan In it, you play warlocks and demigods trying to shape Antarra, a land connected by magical crystal lines. You raise a tower at the crossroads of these crystal lines and then do your best to shape the land around it in your image. During the game, you produce a map of Antarra, which you can keep adding to in future games. The piece features a striking piece of artwork by Alex Prinz.
The Knights of the Faceted Order of Crystal
This is a short history and package of elements detailing a group of knights unerringly committed to upholding their own unforgiving, opaque code. It was written by Edward Hickcox and features some establishing questions, DW stats for the knights, a DW magic item, OSR stats for the Knights, and an OSR magic item. It features a jaw-dropping piece of art by Claudia Cangini (who I can’t tag for some reason).
Guardian Stones
The Guardian Stones are a set of powerful artifacts for Dungeon World. The piece was written by Andrew Shields, and details the process by which your character can become “attuned” to the Guardian stones, the powers granted by the various types of stone, and advanced moves you can take so long as you possess one. The piece features a trippy piece of artwork by Ray Otus
Three Dozen Rumors About Crystal Falls Township
This is a Twin Peaks-flavored miscellany, about the strange town of Crystal Falls. It is presented as a series of notebook entries, feverishly dictated by some unknown resident.
This month’s cover art is by Vandel J. Arden. Layout is by Oli Jeffery. Editing was done by David LaFreniere and myself.

This is the first session in our new DW adventure, The Merry Abattoir, part of We Hunt the Keepers! campaign. Like the adventures before it, Session 1 is a free standing one-shot. The actual Merry Abattoir story will be in Sessions 2-4.
This was a lot of fun! Our Dungeon World play has lately been fantastic. Thanks to the players: Chris Wiegand Gerrit Reininghaus Fraser Simons and Maria Rivera!
On Sunday we began our four-session run of Cthulhu Dark: The History of Mercy Falls.
On Sunday we began our four-session run of Cthulhu Dark: The History of Mercy Falls. Mercy Falls is the setting we have been exploring via Monsterhearts this year on both Pocket-Sized Play and YouTube. This Cthulhu Dark run is four one-shot mysteries, each showing the town of Mercy Falls during different periods of American history.
For this first session, we see Mercy Falls in the 1830s, when it was a camp stopover along the Oregon Trail. Despite a couple of technical hiccups with the recording (they are fairly minor), we managed to tell a very creepy tale involving weird time dilations, an ancient race of bird people, and one very familiar, physically imposing cultist from the mainline Mercy Falls series.
Thanks to the excellent players in this session: David LaFreniere Lauren McManamon Philipp Neitzel and Oli Jeffery!
