I’m looking at news reports of the devastation in Houston, and it’s making me really sad.

I’m looking at news reports of the devastation in Houston, and it’s making me really sad. Houston, of course, is where the Gauntlet was born. It’s a place where I made many terrific, lifelong friends. It’s a place where some of my favorite memories were made.

I’m sad and a little frustrated, too, because a lot of the social media chatter I’m seeing is very “well, global warming, duh!” with the implication that Houston is getting what it deserves because so much of its economy depends on the energy industry and because Houston is in a deep-red state.

Something I experience a lot as a Texan “living abroad” is talking to other liberals who have the most uninformed, bird’s-eye view of Texas imaginable. Texas is a big, culturally-complex state. Houston is one of the most diverse, reliably Democratic cities in the whole fucking country. Corpus Christi, also hit hard by the hurricane, is a majority-Hispanic city.

Anyway… It’s a scary time. If anyone reading this has been affected by the storm, please stay safe and let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Here is a link to Session 3 of Urban Shadows: The Violet Crown. In this one:

-Our PCs have a showdown with the fey of Hippie Hollow, who are up to some very unpleasant shit;

-the mystery of what is being hidden in the basement of the Texas History Museum is revealed;

-the vamp food truck front Night Noms is making its move on South Austin (because it’s less dangerous to feed on working-class Mexicans than rich, white hipsters);

-our Aware gets to reclaim some of his dignity from his ex-wife;

-the PCs trigger their intimacy moves by smoking a bowl and pouring out their hearts to one another; and

-there’s a bit of light puppy play between our Tainted and his Dark Patron.

It’s a party!

Here is a link to the newest episode of Fear of a Black Dragon! In this one, Tom McGrenery and I are exploring the gelid catacombs of the OSR classic, Death Frost Doom. It’s one of my very favorite adventures, and I can’t wait to share why I love it so much with you.

This episode was really fun to plan and record, and I think you’ll agree Tom and I are really hitting our stride with this new show. The Expert Delve portion is particularly fun because we get to hear Tom talk about his experience running Death Force Doom, a re-skin using Imperial stormtroopers and the Stay Frosty rule set.

Also: thanks to Paul Edson for the sharp edit!

Enjoy!

We have a terrific LARP going into Codex – Joy called Bunk Beds.

We have a terrific LARP going into Codex – Joy called Bunk Beds.

We have a terrific LARP going into Codex – Joy called Bunk Beds. It was originally a 200 Word RPG Challenge entry by Adam McConnaughey. David LaFreniere and I really loved it and so we reached out to Adam about expanding the word count for inclusion in Codex. The end result is a game about kids creeping each other out during a sleepover and it’s really cool. We also commissioned a beautiful piece of art by Evan Rowland, which can be seen below.

Codex – Joy will be in our $4+ Patreon feed on September 1st!

We’re getting close to Episode 50 of Discern Realities, as well as the release of the Discern Realities Annual, and so David LaFreniere and I are doing a lot of looking back on where the show came from. In that spirit, we have decided to release Ramshackle Crow and the Temple of the Peerless Star into the podcast feed.

Ramshackle Crow and the Temple of the Peerless Star was originally produced for the launch of The Gauntlet’s Patreon. It consists of the AP segments from the first 12 episodes of the show, stitched together with original music and foley. It has a radio drama quality to it, especially once it gets going (right around the time Ramshackle enters the temple). It’s an AP that builds to a really feverish, exciting climax, and we think you’ll like it.

Enjoy!

Oli Jeffery has an AW playbook in Codex – Joy called The Kawaii!

Oli Jeffery has an AW playbook in Codex – Joy called The Kawaii!

Oli Jeffery has an AW playbook in Codex – Joy called The Kawaii!!!!. I’ve mentioned it before, but the text is really dynamite, very enjoyable to read. Here is the Special Move (Sex Move):

The Kawaii don’t have sex, silly! Ewww! Gross! If you and another character have a sweet but chaste romantic misunderstanding that ends with either of you blushing, getting a nosebleed or coming up with a garbled, shouted explanation of why you don’t think they’re cute at all uh uh no way, the other character counts as part of The One and you give them +1HX.
