Ribbon Drive was a great success yesterday! We had a lot of fun, and the story we told will probably stick with me for awhile. It was basically a cross between Little Miss Sunshine and American Beauty. We played a deeply-dysfunctional family who had lost everything in a fire (including the golden child son, James), and who were now heading to California to start their lives over again.
A big part of this game is the music that is playing in the background while you play. We had a lot of Talking Heads, DragonForce, Mountain Goats, and hip-hop. The music is incorporated in a way, mechanically, that is engaging, but that also lets it get out of the way when necessary. It’s pretty nice.

“Hurtling down the highway in a 1973 AMC Matador, you are an extremely unlikely group of individuals. How did you get here? Why are you going so fast? The answers, and your destiny, are all right here in this cramped seventies muscle car.”
So, tomorrow is Ribbon Drive, and I’m a little nervous about it.
So, tomorrow is Ribbon Drive, and I’m a little nervous about it. This game has some very strange mechanics (you use mix tapes to tell a story about a road trip) and I feel like it could careen right over the edge if we’re not careful with it. Fortunately, the group playing tomorrow is comprised of people I trust in terms of handling themselves well in a story game. Most everyone also played My Life with Master, which is another high-concept game. We had great fun with that one, so hopefully we’ll pull this one off, too.
Discussion: Are there aspects of RPGs that are unnecessary holdovers from the hobby’s roots in wargaming?
Discussion: Are there aspects of RPGs that are unnecessary holdovers from the hobby’s roots in wargaming? Which mechanical tropes, if any, are downright vestigial in the year 2013? On the flipside, if it hadn’t been for wargaming, would we even have RPGs? Could we have gotten to a game like, say, Fiasco, without starting at Chainmail?
I have some opinions, but in the interest of open discussion, I will refrain from offering them.
