The Warren

(formerly Lapins & Lairs)

Ok, so I’m at that point again where I want to get feedback and, if I’m lucky, some outside playtesting done on this game that I’ve been working on.  A while back I released a 6-page hack and, after some playtest feedback, I’ve since fleshed it out into a full rules text.

The Warren

The Warren is a game about intelligent rabbits trying to make the best of a world filled with hazards, predators and, worst of all, other rabbits.  While the rabbits in your games will solve some of their problems and discover things they never thought to try before, they are still bound by their basic physiology and nature.

My aim is to create a *World game that is to Bunnies and Burrows what Dungeon World is to Dungeons and Dragons.

The playtest version, linked below, is all prettied up and ready to go.

Questions, comments, and curse words are all welcome forms of feedback (even if you just read through the text).

Note: If you played in a game of Lapins & Lairs and I didn’t include you in the acknowledgements, let me know.

A new BoH. I’m not sure what to make of it. Does anyone know Over the Edge?

Since its 1992 publication, Over the Edge has become a cult classic of tabletop roleplaying games. Devious secret agents, subtle alien invasions, ancient conspiracies, the secret of human nature, drooling psychopaths, weird science — the surreal undercurrents of William Burroughs, Philip K. Dick, and David Lynch have come to roleplaying. Now the Bundle of Holding presents the Over the Edge collection from Atlas Games, including the rulebook and a comprehensive collection of supplements that give you everything you need to launch your own OTE campaign on Al Amarja, the mysterious Mediterranean island that is home to all that is sinister and bizarre.

For just US$5.95, you get our core collection with the complete rulebook and two supplements (a $33 value) as DRM-free .PDF ebooks:

* Over the Edge: The 241-page 2nd-edition rulebook by Jonathan Tweet (D&D 3e, 13th Age, Ars Magica) and Robin D. Laws (the GUMSHOE System, Hillfolk, Feng Shui).

* Over the Edge Players’ Survival Guide: Jonathan Tweet’s 80-page compendium lets you survive, if not thrive, in Al Amarja.

* Pierced Heart: The Over the Edge novel by Robin D. Laws — a thrilling introduction to the Al Amarja setting. (This was Robin’s first novel.)

And if you pay more than the threshold price (starting at $13.95), you’ll level up and receive our entire collection of four bonus supplements, including one of the most revered sourcebooks ever released for any RPG:

* At Your Service: Every OTE Game Moderator can use this 110-page Al Amarjan location sourcebook.

* Cloaks: Jonathan Tweet’s sourcebook about Al Amarjan secret agents — being hunted by them, and being them.

* Forgotten Lives: A collection of six OTE scenarios ideal for launching or rounding out your campaign.

* Weather the Cuckoo Likes: This landmark early sourcebook about the Cut-Ups conspiracy, marked by terrific writing and inventive new rules, put Robin D. Laws on the gaming map.

The complete collection retails for $62. And stay tuned — we’ll be adding a raft of extra titles before this one’s over. Remember, if you buy now, you’ll automatically receive any bonus title we add later on your Wizard’s Cabinet download page. This is your reward for buying early.

Your purchase supports Atlas Games and the charities selected by OTE designer Jonathan Tweet, Heifer International and the charity preferred by Jonathan’s late wife, Tracy, Planned Parenthood. And remember, now you can send a Bundle of Holding as a gift. These ebooks are suitable for any tablet, and they make great gifts at any time of year.

The starting threshold price of this bundle will be weighted to keep it from rising too fast. The sooner you buy, the lower the threshold price, and the cheaper it is to get the bonus supplements. But act fast — this Over the Edge offer heads over the precipice next Wednesday morning, January 15.

We were short a player from our regular group yesterday, and so we pushed Misspent Youth to next week and played Fiasco instead. We used the Back to the Old House playset, which is definitely one of the weirder ones.

Yesterday we had an awesome game of World of Dungeons.

Yesterday we had an awesome game of World of Dungeons.

Yesterday we had an awesome game of World of Dungeons. I brought all my GM talents to bear in order to give the players an entire campaign in a single session!

We started with 15 characters (each player had 3). Each character was a member of the far-flung Waystone clan. The nearly 100 members of the Waystone clan had gathered for a family reunion that was held every ten years. On the third night of feasting and celebration, they were attacked by the forces of the drow noble house Grazzdira. The whole of the Waystone clan was enslaved and endured three months of harsh labor and torture at the hands of the dark elves.

One day, while the remnants of the clan were laboring in an Underdark mine, Grandma Waystone collapsed from exhaustion. The drider task masters threw her into a pen of dog-sized spiders, where she was devoured. This was the final straw which caused our 15 characters to rise-up against their drow masters. And so the first half of the session was our level 0 Waystones trying to break free from the dark elves and escape to the surface. In the end, most of the characters were slaughtered by dark elves and various other horrors of the Underdark (including tentacled lake creatures, umber hulks, a purple worm, and giant spiders). But five of the Waystones survived. They became adventurers and went their separate ways.

Ten years after that, the five survivors gathered at the location where the Waystones would have had their family reunion if they had not been decimated ten years prior. They were more powerful now (level 5) and loaded with magical items. They went back into the Underdark to take their revenge on Lady Grazzdira and her clan.

And so the second half of the session was the five survivors making their way back to House Grazzdira to take their revenge (one of them had a minstrel named Tarantino in tow). The fight to get back to the dark elf compound involved a run-in with some piercers (a classic DnD monster) and a giant spider golem made of quicksilver, which Lady Grazzdira had patrolling the caverns around her manse. Having dispatched the golem, the gang snuck onto the manse grounds.

By some strange coincidence, the party managed to arrive on the very day Lady Grazzdira had summoned a Council of Darkness, which included a treacherous human lord; a beholder gangster; a trio of illithids; an orc chieftain; and the great black dragon, Ebon Doom. Having managed to spy on the council and learn of their plan to launch an attack on the surface world, the party endeavored to put an end to the whole lot of them.

What took place thereafter was the party using various sneaky tricks to turn the  council against each other. Ultimately, there was a showdown with Lady Grazzdira and her forces. One of the characters managed to summon the very purple worm that had killed his mother during the original escape ten years ago, which he used to dispatch the drow matron and her clan.

The entire Council of Darkness was destroyed except for the black dragon, Ebon Doom. As a sort of epilogue to the story, while the party was gathering the bones of fallen Waystones from the slave mines, Ebon Doom appeared. Some tensions that had been building between the party spilled out into the open when Ebon Doom offered that he would let one of them live. The party began to fight each other, which Ebon Doom watched with some delight. When the great black dragon grew bored, he summoned a storm of acid to dispatch them. The party tried to fight back, but were no match for the dragon.

In the end, only two Waystones survived the dragon’s attack, but the family’s revenge against Lady Grazzdira was complete.

For those of you who don’t know, World of Dungeons is the answer to the following question: “If Dungeon World was the latest version of a classic roleplaying game, what would the original look like?” It’s a brilliant devolution of the Dungeon World mechanics, and I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.

After 2.5 weeks without any roleplaying games (can you imagine?) next week is looking pretty good: World of Dungeons…
