Ok, kiddos, it’s time to start thinking about the Fall calendar. Does anyone have ideas for games they’d like to play or run, or special events they’d like to see? Do you have some thoughts on things you’d like to see changed in the group? Does the current line-up of game nights work?

Feel free to brainstorm in the comments.

Game: Lady Blackbird

Players: Lynn Byrd Derek Grimm Shadow Byrd Rob Ferguson James Wilder Myself

Sometimes roleplaying can get a little awkward. If we’re doing it right, I think it’s practically unavoidable. After all, we’re sitting around a table, pretending to be fictional characters. Sometimes we speak in funny voices; sometimes we engage in behavior that challenges us or makes us cringe.

The attached video was shot last year during a game of Lady Blackbird. It has never been shown to anyone. The scene captured contains no great feats of acting or characterization, but it does show one man’s “all-in” attempt to get a bonus die for his character.

As I recall, Cyrus Vance (played by Lynn) wanted to get his bonus for wooing Lady Blackbird (played by Derek). As the GM, I insisted Lynn do a scene in which Cyrus expressed his hidden longing for the Lady. This is what he came up with. Also, stay until the very end to catch a funny parapraxis by Lynn.

For anyone curious, we had a terrific time at our second Saturday Super Medley.

For anyone curious, we had a terrific time at our second Saturday Super Medley. The theme of this particular Super Medley was video games. To that end, we played some amazing local multiplayer games, including Hidden in Plain Sight, Towerfall Ascension, Monaco, Nidhogg, Sportfriends, Dive Kick, Space Team, Bounden, and Johann Sebastian Joust.

We also had a single-elimination Nidhogg tournament and a double-elimination Divekick tournament.

The evening came to a conclusion with JS Joust, which is freaking AMAZING. I love, love, love that game, and I can’t wait to do it again.

Thanks to Daniel Lewis for doing a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of logistics, and to everyone else who came out to play: Russell Benner Ferrell Riley Jacob Densford Gary Wilson David LaFreniere and Daniel Fowler .

We had our best turnout ever for Wednesday One-Shots (18 people!).

We had our best turnout ever for Wednesday One-Shots (18 people!). The games played were The Ladykillers, Trail of Cthulhu, and The Final Girl. I played in the game of The Final Girl. We did something a little different with it – the victims were sentient toys and the ‘killer’ was all the various environmental hazards a sentient toy would face (cruel older brothers, little sisters, dogs, and so forth). It was pretty rad.

Thanks to everyone who came out: Russell Benner Angel Ludwig Daniel Lewis Ferrell Riley David LaFreniere James Melott Jenny Barendt Gary Wilson Daniel Fowler Scott Owen Kristen D and all the rest!

Discussion: The hobby is currently consumed with the arrival of a new edition of D&D. But there are many other roleplaying games on their way this year that are also worth getting excited about. Here are some I’m looking forward to: The Clay that Woke, Worlds in Peril, Primetime Adventures (3rd ed.), Night Witches, World Wide Wrestling.

Which games or products are you looking forward to right now?

Just a reminder: there are no games scheduled for Friday or Sunday.
