Game Closet

I had the pleasure and privilege of being invited onto Game Closet earlier this year. That episode is out today and I encourage everyone to give it a listen. Taylor asked me about a lot of things I don’t often get to talk about in the gaming space, and I really, really enjoyed the conversation. We talk a lot about the foundational ideas of this community, making space for folks from marginalized groups, my personal philosophy on games and gaming, and how I got started with the hobby.

Check it out!

I’m going to start running an in-person game for 8-12 players, mixed kids and adults. Suggestions for a game to run? I’m pretty sure the kids can handle relatively complex games, but I want something that will keep everyone interested over the course of an ongoing campaign.

I enjoy listening to “+1 Forward” (both the game specific episodes and the more general PbtA advice) but I don’t really play much PbtA.

Does anyone know of a similar podcast about Fate games?

I figure some folks here in The Gauntlet are already familiar with SIGMATA: This Signal Kills Fascists.

I was a KS backer so I downloaded it right away and had a chance for a quick skim before I went to bed last night. Wow! I expected this game to be fun but the book includes whole essays devoted to an intro and analysis of recent modern insurgencies like the Arab Spring, and provides a practical, real-world introduction to the “ethical insurgency” model baked into the core of the game. If you care about politics these days–especially if you’re learning how to effectively organize against fascist elements of society–I don’t think you’ll find a more gameable examination of theory and praxis than this.

A friend of mine in the UK is planning to run Rovers at the Continuum game convention this weekend. I decided he needed a promo flyer so I hand-crafted this. I didn’t “use Photoshop” or “Do a decent job” but I work within my own constraints. Many thanks to Catherine Ramen of Aviatrix Games

Hi there

Hi there

Hi there,

Trying to get back in the design of this game by sharing it with more people, and maybe get back to the more complex rpg version.

“Xenophon ” is a storygame for 3-6 players. It let’s players create their own take on the Ten Thousand’s Persian Expedition. Players go through six Stations, facing different challenges, defying fate and developing – or stressing – bonds with each other.

The themes of the game are companionship and sacrifice – will you return to Hellas and how much have you changed during your voyage?

Looking forward to hear more from you!

We at The Gauntlet are unabashed fans of the story game Cheat Your Own Adventure.

We at The Gauntlet are unabashed fans of the story game Cheat Your Own Adventure. Remember when you read those Choose Your Own Adventure books as a kid and would keep your thumb in the spot where you had to make a decision so just in case it was the wrong one you could come back? Well, imagine a simple story game like that… Anyway, we are putting together a collection of story starters for the game and we would love your pitches!

Head over to http://tinyurl.com/Gauntlet-CYOA. There you will see a folder of examples pulled from our monthly zine Codex, the actual pdf with the rules for the game (which fit on half a page), and a form for submitting your pitch. The entries in the example folder will give you a good idea of what you’d eventually end up writing. (Likely 250-500 words (you’ll be paid $0.05/word if we use your submission)) The form is just for your initial pitch – a one-line idea and a few quick categorization questions. Feel free to put in as many pitches as you’d like. Once we’re ready we’ll get in touch with you if we’re interested in having you write up and submit your full scenario.
