The Gauntlet After Dark – Weird DR Bookends

For whatever reason, I always want to post weird things at night. I usually stop myself, but this one is too interesting to pass up…

David LaFreniere and I have been doing Discern Realities for a year now, and he just finished editing Episode 36. On a lark, he decided to listen to Episode 1 again, just to reflect on where we’ve been, and he noticed some cool parallels between Episode 1 and Episode 36. Here they are, for your amusement:

1. We begin Episode 1 by talking about Dragon Magazine, and we mention Dragon Magazine again on Episode 36.

2. In Episode 1, I refer to Epidiah Ravachol as a “friend.” In Episode 36, I loudly yell “Everyone is my friend!” (though it gets edited out in the final cut).

3. In the first segment of Episode 1, we talk about a player whose character dies in the first session, but later comes back to life. In addition to foreshadowing Ramshackle Crow’s eventual death & resurrection, we also leave Ramshackle in a near-death cliffhanger at the end of Episode 36.

4. In Episode 1, we talk about a magic item called the Ebony Cat, and in the stinger of Episode 36, David mentions how much he hates cats.

I love little synchronicities like that, haha.

Hey. James Mullen and I are launching an online playtesting community that’ll start in earnest in the new year.

The idea is that it’ll be a place for indie tabletop designers of all levels to gather, discuss their games, and most importantly arrange Hangout playtests of each other’s games.

If you’re a games designer looking for playtesters, or if you’re just interested in playing in any of the upcoming games, send us a join request. No games are planned till January, but if you sign up now we can start arranging stuff.

Looking forward to playing with you!

Spent today playing with the laser cutter at the Austin Tech Shop. Working on Version 2 of my DIY Gauntlet Championship belt and I think the final product will look fairly cool. Unfortunately I made a few mistakes. Check it out. I won’t be able to try again till January. Anyone know how to get cheap leather or something like leather for the belt?

A dream for Judd Karlman Richard Rogers Noah Jay-Bonn Tim B Fraser Simons YG Mitchell and David LaFreniere for being the first to brave Comic Strip AP with me. It’s a strange, somewhat intimidating idea, but I’m glad you guys were willing to be the first to give it a shot.

A dream for Oli Jeffery, my amazing and talented collaborator on Codex. The zine has wildly exceeded my expectations, and it seems to be getting better and better.

A dream for Ferrell Riley Kristen D Scott Owen and the rest of the Gauntlet Houston crew. You guys are doing such a fabulous job with the original Gauntlet, and while that delights me, it also makes me a tiny bit sad, because I wish I was still there with you guys.

A dream for the Keepers of the Gauntlet (our Patreon supporters). I can’t stress enough how much everything depended on a successful Patreon launch. I looked at the performance of our peers in this space, and for months the prospect of launching our own page filled me with dread. I was practically paralyzed with fear the morning I pressed the ‘Launch’ button. Thank you so much for coming through.

A dream for Daniel Lugo. You have rather admirably carved out your own space on Gauntlet Hangouts, and under circumstances that are pretty challenging. Also, you take the time to honestly assess your skills as a GM, and make adjustments where needed, which is a very wise and thoughtful thing to do. Bravo!

Ok, that’s what I’ve got for now. Do you have any dreams to pass out? If so, do so in the comments!
