AdoptAGame: Gauntlet Con

Hi Folks!

I too would like to talk about the slots I have open: both are Saturday Evening and are “It’s Not My Fault” a Card-based version of the Fate Accelerated (FAE) RPG.

It allows for fantastic and interesting character generation then places the group in a starting situation “In Media Res!” We take a few minutes to determine why the starting situation isn’t “your fault” then spring headlong into what ever collaborative chaos follows.

The 8pm PST slot on Saturday Oct 21st, is a 2 hour version with a card list that is basically inspired by classic fantasy RPG classes (warrior, wizard, burglar, etc). The 10pm slot (immediately following it) will include fantasy races (Vampire, Orc, Goblin, Zombie, etc) and you can have one of those or remain human.

The “I’m Fantastic” slot will skew towards the more gonzo play (usually), but both will be a ton of fun.

Here is an example of a starting set up (using the INMF on line browser sheet (which we will be using):

Jonathan Lavallee is a game designer from Toronto. He’s been making games for over 13 years now, from larger product lines like CyberGeneration to Chill 3rd edition, to smaller games like Gaesa and Critical!: Go Westerly. Currently he’s working on a collaborative teenage detective storytelling game called We Used To Be Friends and will be joining the Hand Eye Society as part of the Artist in Residency program at the Toronto Oakwood Public Library. There he’s going to be talking to kids about “screenless games” as well as working on a new collaborative game where you play “monsters” trying to reintegrated into society called Third Life.

During Gauntlet Con, Jonathan will be running Awoke.

With Gauntlet Con less than a week away, I would like to propose a way to draw attention to the last open slots: Adopt a Gauntlet Con game.

The game I like to adopt is Troika! run by Sherman S.

Troika! is a weird OSR type game where the old school is not D&D but Advanced Fighting Fantasy that uses various combination of d6s (d3, d66, d666) as the resolution mechanism. The game is probably best known for its quirky initiative system: Every PC gets two tokens, all monsters get tokens and there is an end of the round token as well. Tokens are pulled out from the Bag until the end of round token is drawn, so a sequence could be: Monster, Monster, End of Round (which would suck very much) or Player A, Player A, Player C, Monster, End of Round etc. Even if you are not a fan of initiative systems you just have to admire the chaos and unpredictability of the concept.

What really attracts me to the system, though, is the hilarious character backgrounds and the setting they imply: Don’t you want to play a Parchment Witch who should stay away from open fire, a Poorly Made Dwarf who non-Dwarfs will just mistake for the real deal or a Monkeymonger with d6 edible monkeys and a bag full of monkey treats? Of course you do!

Just sign up for You vs. The Horrendous Heap.

There are roughly five days remaining to get your submission in for the Gauntlet Con writing contest! The deadline is 10.16.17 at 11:59 PM EDT. The number of submissions we have received so far is pretty small, which means this contest is wide open. Check out the prizes:

One winner receives:

-$100 cash prize

-Gets their submission published in Codex (with original art and layout)

-Gets featured on one of our podcasts.

Up to two runners-up each receive:

-$50 cash prize

One thing that goes unspoken, but is probably worth mentioning now: we use these writing contests to populate Codex as a general matter. There is a strong chance that if we like your submission but it doesn’t win, we may pay you for the right to publish it in Codex anyway.

And it’s just a great way of getting your stuff noticed. The Codex team is reading through these super carefully, and the panel of judges is awesome. And speaking of judges…

I am SO EXCITED to announce the final judge for the contest: Sarah Richardson! Sarah is the author of Velvet Glove and co-author of Bluebeard’s Bride. She has also done a lot of work in the OSR space (Pro tip: if you want your entry to impress her, might I suggest you make it either horrifying or gross af).

Get those entries in! And please re-share this post!

Ryan Macklin Running Games at Gauntlet Con

Ryan Macklin fell in love with running convention games at his first Gen Con 14 years ago. That passion turned into making games—co-designing Fate and Cortex Plus games, editing on Pathfinder and for indie publishers, and making his own stuff (like the forthcoming Katanas & Trenchcoats). But Ryan always comes back to his first joy of sitting down with a few humans to tell and play out fun, dramatic stories. Unrelated, his cat is a lovable jerk.

During Gauntlet Con, Ryan will be running Katanas & Trenchcoats.

Lowell Francis Running Games at Gauntlet Con

Lowell is a freelance writer/editor and gaming enthusiast. He contributed to the Eisner Award-winning Legends of the Guard and IDW’s Rocketeer Adventures. As well he scripted DC Comics’s Flashpoint: Project Superman. Lowell runs games regularly for The Gauntlet Hangouts. He podcasts with The Gauntlet and Play on Target. His blog, Age of Ravens, won the Silver ENnie for Best Blog in 2017.

Lowell will be running multiple sessions of World Wide Wrestling during the con. This PbtA game simulates the on and off-camera world of “sports entertainment.” Players new and old can sign up for any session. Bring old characters, play multiple sessions, just drop in for one event– it’s a free for all. After picking from available playbooks, players will build relationships and then go through a road-show event. WWW offers great fun and an interesting twist on PbtA mechanics, even for those unschooled (and perhaps uninterested) in Pro-Wrestling.

Slade Stolar Running Games at Gauntlet Con

Slade has been gaming in classrooms, basements, dorm rooms, and gaming stores since the late 90s. He spent most time with AD&D and Vampire, but found Apocalypse World at a crucial phase of his personal development and hasn’t regretted a single session since. These days, Slade is trying to play every kind of game, and thereby reduce the number in his owned-but-not-yet-played pile. With the Gauntlet, Slade enjoys playing Dungeon World and running his own wild creations, recently, Dust, Fog, and Glowing Embers, which was released in late September to all Kickstarter backers and is coming soon to the public.

During Gauntlet Con, Slade will be running Into the Odd and Dust, Fog, and Glowing Embers.
