Apocalypse World 2nd ed MAP

I start any AW campaign with drawing a 5 minute map while we flesh out ideas. There are always raiders, and there’s always Burn Flats. I don’t like to dwell on the setting, so we’ll then launch right into characters and leave nice, glaring blanks on the map.

Then this sits in the middle of the table for every session, and I’m always amazed at how much we use it. The map is more an impression than a reliable guide to the world, and yet we’re pointing at its landmarks all the time.

What’s your experience with drawing maps during play?

Big thanks to special guest Saffire Rainbo, and as always to Timothy Bennett and Tor Droplets. What’d you all think of the episode? Let us know in the comments below!

Gauntlet Portland played Epidiah Ravachol’s Vast & Starlit!

The dispersing of narrative control to build characters and the ship went along so smoothly, as always. With less direction for what actually happens during scenes, things went a bit gonzo as expected, but still made for good stories. The sentient leaf-ship stole thermal energy and sprouted into a tree after escaping an Imperial Fleet, ya know.

The illustrious Gauntlet Portland played the Fiasco playset “Dragon Slayers”! That’s the fantasy trope-y setting from the exhaustive list of playsets (and now republished in Playset Anthology Vol. 1).

There’s a bit of a tone mismatch between Coen Brothers meets the Dungeons & Dragons (2000) film (real talk? teenage me had such a weird thing for Justin Whalin in that movie), yet we still told of a disastrous plan gone horribly well as expected. Good times were had!

Gauntlet Portland played “World of Dungeons”!

Gauntlet Portland played “World of Dungeons”! Though the characters were paper-thin (see literal paper below), we still took time to discuss simple player flags for the session. They were:

* Player A: Player B gives me sound advice that they know I won’t take

* Player B: Player A compromises their values in order to help me succeed

Gauntlet Portland played Marshall Miller’s The Warren today, and for the third time I ran “The Threat of Cottontail’s Ascendancy”. A torrential downpour beat on the tin roof above us while we told a pretty dang grisly tale that ended with my first case of rabbit-on-rabbit homicide!

The setting was summer camp, and the killer was the camp’s collective repressed sexuality manifested as a grotesque monster. (On the nose, right?) Thanks Will, Kyle Donadio, and Brian Edge! Check out the Meetup group at http://www.meetup.com/Gauntlet-Portland/.

Interested in setting up a PbP game of Dungeon World over Google Docs?  I recently wrapped up a campaign and uploaded a folder of helpful resources at: https://goo.gl/r3wz5q . Perhaps this can get added to the group Play Aids folder eventually?

Also, the players should shout out below about thoughts or advice! I’m talking to you, Pat Perkins, Russell Williams, Sebastian Meid, Timothy Bennett, and Tor Droplets!
