On Wednesday we kicked off a three-session series of Dungeon World called Wildspace. We used my Spelljammer custom move set, which I’m happy to report worked very well.

It was a great session. For starters, the players did a good job capturing the tone. At the outset, I explained to the group that because our last few series had a very heavy, grimdark tone, I wanted to go with something a little more lighthearted for this one. The players delivered with a high adventure, swashbuckling approach to their characters, coupled with a fair amount of blue humor, which kept the laughs coming.

My favorite moment was near the end. After a successful space battle with a gnomish sidewheeler, the captain of that ship, Butternut Treefoil, made a desperate bid to save himself by trying to take a hostage on the deck of the party’s hammership. One of the characters, Phillip’s tiefling bard (using the excellent Bard playbook by David Guyll and Melissa Fisher), did his move Magical Music, which not only subdued Captain Butternut, but also had a profound effect on other members of the party. Each took a moment to share how the bard’s song affected them, and we set up some future scenes to explore how the bard’s art might help some of the characters deal with the demons of their past. It was all very lovely.

Big thanks to my players from that session: Phillip Wessels Fraser Simons Christo Meid and Timothy Bennett

  1. Those ships remind me of some mind flayer spaceships I drew a while back. Mine were more organic though, just living nautilus-like and squid-like creatures that served as ships. I also started my space fantasy dungeon world campaign recently and am super excited to see where it goes.

Out of curiosity, what is your spelljammer move?
