Does anyone have any thoughts on the upcoming 5th edition?

Does anyone have any thoughts on the upcoming 5th edition? I will be the first to admit the artwork on the new books is pretty great (although, if we’re being honest, that’s table stakes for WotC).

I think it’s interesting they are doing organized-play stuff. I wonder if it will attract the same sorts of people that Pathfinder Society does? Because, if so, they can forget about a mainstream breakthrough – normal people don’t want to vacation on that island of misfit toys. I’m also curious about the rules. I stopped keeping-up after it occurred to me Dungeon World had this shit figured out already.

  1. I’m with you. I found my system already. I will be getting the starter set, but only becasue Amazon pre-order has it for $13. So no loss.

I’ve seen the rules, as of the last Encounters game. Meh. A couple of interesting ideas, mostly releated to Advantage and Disadvantage. But the rule can be stolen ad added to any game system. The system is too safe…rather mediocre.

Besides, I have no faith in WotC properly managing the brand after all these years.

  3. I played it a year back at Gencon and didn’t particularly care for it. However, things have hopefully changed since then or it was just the convention curse thing. Regardless, I will atleast buy the boxed set and see what is what. At this point, Dungeon World is THE answer to fantasy RPGs for me so I can’t really see myself getting into this. However, 4th edition was so terrible, I’m dying to see what they finally got going. I started out on D&D so it will always have a place in my heart; it is worth the price of the boxed set at the bare minimal.

  5. Wish i had some info to add to this but i’ve only casually listened to details of the system. but really im at the point as a gamemaster where im more interested in settings/art than systems, especially complex ones.

  7. Not my bag, but I’m curious if–with what sounds like a modular rule set, and after two years of open playtesting–it’ll try to please everyone and end up pleasing no one, or if they’ll have it somewhat figured out.

  9. My thoughts..it’s more crunchy than Basic, and less than 1e. I saw nothing from 3e (unless you count feats, which are optional). The terminiology is renamed 4e.

All in all, a watered down experience. I’ve played every version since the Red Box, and I liked 4e. But this in not the “One System to Rule Them All”. Too much 4e for the OSR crowd, too little 4e for the 4e crowd, and 3e has Pathfinder.
