  1. I’m sitting in my rental car in the bowels of a parking garage before heading into Gen Con today, my mind a perfect slurry of sleep deprivation buzz and fond game session memories. I’m following along and grinning/nodding as you all talk about Gygaxian Actuarial Table Boners, sipping on my Diet Coke, when the phrase “You’re Welcome, Ray Otus” slips in through the car speakers. I choked and literally spit soda everywhere! I mean … shirt to windshield, everywhere. Thanks for the laugh.

  3. Just listened. Great to have Tim on the show!

    1. Gygaxian Actuarial Tables is now part of the Gauntlet podcast lore, I think, along with smooth-chested, hairless teenage werewolves.

    2. Soooo looking foreward to Beyond the Wall in Pocket Sized play. It’s the most Story-Gamey OSR thing I’ve ever read!!

    3. I was disappointed and thought he wasn’t going to do it, but the outro was.. Outrageous! 😄😄

  5. It’s kind of odd to hear someone talk about Beyond the Wall being rules heavy. I understand that it was meant in comparison to the other games he’d been playing, but since I’ve been running D&D 5e for over a year now, I would love to move to a system as relatively light as Beyond the Wall. I really love 5e, but as a DM, I find it has more moving parts than I’d prefer.

  7. Matt Martinez I agree. As light as 5e is, it’s not as light as BtW, which itself, is more crunchy than B/X D&D. And yet, it is pretty much fully compatible with B/X.

I also love the source inspiration: LeGuin and Prydain, etc. Coming of age stories, with D&D goodness!!

  9. Matt Martinez I misspoke if I described Beyond the Wall as ‘rules-heavy’, as it’s definitely built to be light. Compared to story games as a hobby, BtW does have rules for simulationist play since it’s an OSR game. So there’s more of that type of rules, which is new to me! But the rules definitely don’t dominate play.

  11. Tim B I went back to find the quote, and it’s “crunchier than I’m used to.” That is definitely different from “rules-heavy,” so I suppose I misinterpreted/misremembered.
