Friends, I’m excited to share a new episode of +1 Forward with you. The game featured this time is Epyllion. Marissa Kelly was so great in this, running her amazing game with splashes of light and darkness. I wish you could have seen how she roleplayed Flitter, but I think it comes across in audio almost as well as it did over the Hangout.
Of particular note is Marissa’s discussion about how she runs Urban Shadows at conventions for a one-shot. This is some really useful advice for a very complex game.
😍 cute. This is now a prime candidate for the gateway RPG for my daughter… Whyioutta! #exchangeratepostagepain

Plus amazing GMing and concise GM advice from Marissa Kelly

I quite loved the GM advice, too. Marissa’s method for running one-shots reminded me a lot of how I run the short series games we do on Gauntlet Hangouts. Good stuff!

It’s something I need to work on for sure

Eadwin Tomlinson I find you have to go outside the bounds of the normal procedures for a game. When you only have, say, 3 or 4 sessions, you have to find ways of doing character and world development on the fly (this is where a set of leading questions, nicely curated for your setting, is handy). And you have to be sure to epilogue at the end, so everyone gets some closure.

Great episode. I didn’t know what Epyllion was before this, but now I’m curious to pick it up for running with younger players.
Also, the advice for one-shots was spot on. I love the idea of adding in the epilogue for the PCs.

Angela, I have the book, the character cards and the dice and gems that you could get for the game. Next time we run into each other I’ll bring all the goodies so you can see them.

Nice one Rich. I hear Marissa is hard to get to come out and record on a podcast so I’m very excited to listen to this.

She’s worth tracking down.

Such a great episode! I’ve had the pleasure of playing in a one shot of Epyllion that Marissa ran last year at Big Bad Con. She asked the best leading questions! I wish I knew how she did it, but they seriously drew me into the game so much more.
I really loved the Act Under Fire this time. Sounded like so much fun!

hey Patrick Brannick, you should check out episode 31 of Panda’s Talking Games. It’s all about questions (leading and open) and rather good. http://misdirectedmark.com/pandas-talking-games-31-questions/
